New Fairly OddParents Reboot Has Already Made A Strange Choice Bringing Back 2 Characters

A Fairly OddParents spinoff series is officially in development, but it made a strange decision by bringing back two original characters. Nickelodeon is home to some of the most popular cartoon shows of the 1990s and 2000s, among them The Fairly OddParents. Created by Butch Hartman, The Fairly OddParents premiered on Nickelodeon in 1998 and ran for a total of 10 seasons, coming to an end in 2006 before a revival in 2008 that ended in 2012. The Fairly OddParents continued to expand with three movies, and it’s now coming back with a spinoff TV series.

The Fairly OddParents follows Timmy Turner (voiced by Tara Strong), a 10-year-old boy who is neglected by his parents and abused by his babysitter, Vicky. One day, Timmy is granted two fairy godparents named Cosmo (Daran Norris) and Wanda (Susanne Blakeslee), who grant him every wish he desires to improve his life – but these wishes often backfire terribly and Timmy has to fix the mess. Now, viewers will get a new chance to return to the world of The Fairly OddParents with a spinoff series, but even though it’s bringing back two original characters, this is actually detrimental to the franchise.

Nickelodeon’s Fairly Odd Parents Spinoff Should Have Moved On From Cosmo & Wanda

The Fairly OddParents new series is bringing Cosmo & Wanda back.

The Fairly OddParents has already had a spinoff before the one announced in 2024. A live-action spinoff titled The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder was released in 2022 on Paramount+ and it followed Timmy’s cousin, Viv Turner, and her stepbrother Roy Raskin, as they navigated life with the help of Cosmo and Wanda, who were gifted to them by Timmy before he left for college. A spinoff series titled Crash Nebula was planned in 2004, with the pilot episode airing as part of The Fairly OddParents’ fifth season, but it wasn’t picked up by Nickelodeon.

Now, a proper The Fairly OddParents spinoff is in development at Nickelodeon, with Netflix taking care of international release. The series, titled Fairly OddParents: A New Wish, will have Norris and Blakeslee back as Cosmo and Wanda, but they won’t be guiding Timmy Turner anymore. Instead, Cosmo and Wanda will now follow a new character named Hazel Wells (voiced by Ashleigh Crystal Hairston), a 10-year-old who has just moved to Dimmadelphia as her father got a new job. Hazel will not just be adapting to a new environment, but also to being without her brother, Antony, who left for college.

Luckily for Hazel, she will learn that her next-door neighbors aren’t ordinary people and are, instead, Cosmo and Wanda, who come out of retirement to help her. While Cosmo and Wanda are the title characters and have become the image of the Fairly OddParents franchise, it would have been more beneficial for A New Wish to let Cosmo and Wanda retire and, instead, focus on new characters.

A New Wish Could Have Expanded The Franchise With New Fairy Godparents

The new Fairly OddParents series is relying on nostalgia.

New Fairly OddParents Reboot Has Already Made A Strange Choice Bringing Back 2 Characters

Fairly OddParents: A New Wish was the best opportunity to properly expand the universe of The Fairly OddParents. With Timmy no longer around and Cosmo and Wanda retired, A New Wish could have introduced new godparents to guide Hazel. Cosmo and Wanda aren’t the only godparents in the universe of The Fairly OddParents, and these magical beings are trained and later assigned to a child in need to help them make their life less miserable. Fairy godparents are assigned to a child whose parents are similar in personality to them, as seen with Timmy: his parents were foolish and wild and so were Cosmo and Wanda, but they did pay attention to Timmy, unlike his parents.

In theory, Hazel would have to get new fairy godparents that fit her needs and context, and shouldn’t necessarily have Cosmo and Wanda as her godparents. Although it’s understandable that A New Wish is bringing Cosmo and Wanda back for recognition, this spinoff series was the perfect opportunity to expand the world of The Fairly OddParents with new and different godparents who also get Hazel involved in all types of fun and wild adventures.

The Fairly OddParents Spinoff Is A Sad Reminder Of The Original’s Outcome

A New Wish not featuring Timmy shows a sad reality.

Although it’s not the first Fairly OddParents spinoff to not have Timmy Turner as its main character, A New Wish is a sad reminder of how this world works. In The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder, Timmy gave Cosmo and Wanda to his cousin, but A New Wish isn’t bringing Timmy back in any way. With this, A New Wish is showing that Timmy has now grown and no longer needs nor remembers Cosmo and Wanda, which is probably also why the godparents retired.

A New Wish is a sad reminder of the end of childhood and the magic that came with it, though it’s to be seen if this was really the reason why Cosmo and Wanda retired. Of course, Fairly OddParents: A New Wish can still be a fun continuation to The Fairly OddParents thanks to Cosmo and Wanda’s return, but it will be an inevitable reminder of Timmy Turner and what happened to him after the original series ended.
