Fans of Critical Role’s Mighty Nein campaign will soon be able to enjoy their favorite characters’ origin stories in one location courtesy of Dark Horse. Screen Rant has the exclusive details on the upcoming Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins Library Edition Volume 1.
Fans of the Dungeons & Dragons-based stories have already gotten a chance to see the whimsical, if not tragic, origins of several team members such as Jester. But with Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins Library Edition Volume 1, fans will have one oversized collection of stories featuring the members of the Mighty Nein and their humble beginnings. The library edition collects four previously-released standalone graphic novels in the Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins series, from writers and artists such as Sam Maggs, Jody Houser, Cecil Castellucci, Hunter Severn Bonyun, Selina Espiritu, William Kirkby, and Eren Angiolini. Not only will the collection provide readers with backstories of Jester Lavorre, Caleb Widogast, Yasha Nydoorin, and Nott the Brave, but the tome will feature an expanded sketchbook and all-new art by Robynn Frauhn.
The Mighty Nein’s Origins Are Better Together
The Mighty Nein is the second campaign from the hit web series Critical Role, a show featuring several professsional voice actors doing a live play of Dungeons & Dragons. What started as a group of friends engaging in a beloved tabletop game spawned a show with several hundred episodes. The show was so popular, it gave way to a franchise, receiving its own official campaign-setting guides and its first campaign being adapted as a show for Amazon Prime. Not only that, but both the Vox Machina and the Mighty Nein campaigns have both seen their lore expanded with the creation of several tie-in comics.
Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins was a way to explore the haunting backgrounds of the titular heroes. While not every member of Critical Role’s Mighty Nein has gotten a book dedicated to their origin just yet, over half the team has had their origins explored through standalone graphic novels. Not only were these stories told by rising stars in the comic book industry, they were told under the guiding contributions of Critical Role’s core group. While fans currently have the option to purchase these novels separately, a book uniting the team may make for a more satisfying experience.
Bringing The Mighty Nein Together In One Collection
As much as readers may love seeing standalone tales for each member of the Mighty Nein, what fans really love is seeing the team together. But while Critical Role’s campaign may have the team united, these backstories are meant to showcase who these characters were before they ever crossed paths with one another. But just because the Mighty Nein aren’t actually together doesn’t mean their stories can’t be. A library edition such as Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins Library Edition Volume 1 can bring most members of the team together in a place for fans to readily access some of their favorite character’s backstories. Critical Role and Dark Horse’s Critical Role: The Mighty Nein Origins Library Edition Volume 1 will be available everywhere September 13, 2023.
