Marvel Comics has shared more details and dropped a trailer for its upcoming Alien comic book series and for those hoping to see brutal, violent Xenomorph action, they are in for a treat. The comic will follow a new character, Gabriel Cruz, who teams up with his son and a Bishop-model android as they encounter deadly Xenomorphs in what’s set to be a terrifying read.
Marvel Comics acquired the rights to the Alien (and The Predator) franchises back when they purchased 20th Century Fox. Marvel quickly opted to announce that the IP would be getting its own comic franchise, unveiling a new series back in July 2020. The original Alien film starring Sigourney Weaver by Ridley Scott and its sequel Aliens by James Cameron are considered some of the best horror science fiction movies of all time – with the latest release in the franchise being 2017’s Alien: Covenant. Alien is no stranger to appearing in the comics either, as multiple runs and one-shots have been released (primarily by Dark Horse Comics) since the late 80s.
On Friday, Marvel Comics dropped a trailer for the new series by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Salvador Larroca, GURU-eFX, and Inhyuk Lee. The comic will follow Gabriel Cruz who worked for the Weyland-Yutani Corporation where he was nearly killed by Xenomorphs. Sadly, he’ll run into the scary space monsters when he tries to reconnect with his son, alongside a Bishop-model android. The video shows the dangers of Xenomorphs, as they’re on the hunt on a space station, as Facehuggers can be seen. Also present is a remix on the iconic tagline, reading “42 years later, no one can hear you scream.” The trailer features new artwork that hasn’t been shown yet.
For those worried that Marvel Comics might water down the franchise in the comics in order to appeal to a wider audience, that doesn’t appear to be the case. The trailer is tense, suspenseful, and filled with terror. It’s also fascinating to see a Bishop-model android as part of the main cast in the series – as there are questions as to whether this version of Bishop is more like the movie version or just so happens to be the same model.
The Alien franchise seems to be in good hands in the comics. The trailer makes it clear Marvel paid close attention to what made the original franchise great while introducing new characters that bring freshness to a more than 40-year-old franchise. At the very least, it looks appropriately scary. Xenomorphs and the Alien franchise will debut in Marvel Comics when the new series comes out on March 24, 2021.
