Netflix’s Sweet Home Replacement Premiers In 2024 (& It’s A Live-Action Manga Adaptation)

Netflix’s Sweet Home Replacement Premiers In 2024 (& It’s A Live-Action Manga Adaptation)

Sweet Home could be ending soon, but Netflix already has the perfect replacement for the hit K-drama series – and it is a live-action adaptation of a horror manga. Sweet Home season 3 is being officially described as a “grand finale,” suggesting it could be the show’s final. This would make sense considering most of the webtoon Sweet Home is based on has already been covered, and that the stakes for the third season are extremely high.

The best Netflix K-drama shows have mostly been successes for the streaming platform, including but not limited to global hits like Squid Game, All of Us Are Dead, and Sweet Home. The latest Sweet Home season 3 updates have only increased the anticipation for the show’s return, which, this time, will not take long. Sweet Home 3 premiers in 2024, the same year in which Netflix will release another promising K-drama about monsters.

Parasyte: The Grey Is The Perfect Replacement For Sweet Home

The upcoming K-drama will be based on the Parasyte manga

Director Yeon Sang-ho is helming Parasyte: The Grey for Netflix, which will be an original story based on the world of Hitoshi Iwaak’s Parasyte manga. Parasyte: The Grey will be the third live-action version of Parasyte, yet it will be the first TV show outside of the anime series based on that story. However, while the general premise of Parasyte is being incorporated into this new K-drama series, Parasyte: The Grey will not be about Shinichi Izumi. Instead, Parasyte: The Grey will star Jeon So-nee as Jeong Su-in, the lead character who will combine herself with a mysterious organism.

Although there are plenty of K-dramas based on a webtoon, including Sweet Home, there are not many Korean shows based on highly popular Japanese manga like Parasyte. Therefore, Netflix’s Parasyte: The Grey is already quite special, and the platform’s best horror K-dramas suggest this is a great match. Just like Parasyte, Sweet Home told a story about monsters while exploring deeper themes, resulting in an incredible series where the action and the jump scares were just a small part of what it had to offer. With Sweet Home reaching its conclusion, Parasyte: The Grey can be Netflix’s next major horror hit.

How Parasyte: The Grey Can Be Similar To Sweet Home

Parasyte and Sweet Home are more than just their monsters

On a surface level, the Parasyte manga can be described as a sci-fi meets horror story about a high school student who merges with an alien organism. However, it did not take long for the manga, which was adapted into an anime series in 2015, to evolve into a complex story about multiple themes. Parasyte discusses what it means to be alive and humanity’s role in the great scheme of things, which are similar themes to the ones addressed in Sweet Home. The philosophical aspects of both properties aside, Sweet Home and Parasyte are also both great horror stories.

Every Korean Drama & Movie Coming To Netflix In 2024

From Squid Game 2 season 2 and Sweet Home season 3 to Queen of Tears and Parasyte: The Grey, Netflix’s 2024 Korean content lineup is very exciting.

Naturally, whether Parasyte: The Grey will recapture the quality of the original manga is difficult to say, but the idea of telling an original story based on Parasyte’s premise is exciting. Shinichi Izumi’s journey was already covered in the original manga, the live-action movies, and the anime series, meaning yet another version of it would not add much to Parasyte’s legacy. Having a different author bringing their vision to the world of Parasyte on a different adaptation can result in a fantastical show that could be as big as Sweet Home if done right.

Parasyte: The Grey Could Be A Landmark For Manga Adaptations

Netflix has had a couple of great manga adaptations before

Although the list of Netflix anime and manga adaptations includes a lot of disappointments, such as Death Note (2017) and Cowboy Bebop (2021), the streamer has released some great shows based on Japanese productions. For example, Yu Yu Hakusho successfully portrayed the essence of the characters and delivered some amazing fight scenes, though it changed the structure of the story quite a lot. Alice in Borderland, based on the manga of the same name by Haro Aso, is one of Netflix’s most successful Japanese shows and will return for a third season. Recently, One Piece season 1 surpassed all expectations.

Still, Parasyte: The Grey can be a pioneer in an unexplored genre – manga or anime adaptations that borrow only the concept of an IP to tell an original story. For example, if the Parasyte K-drama works, it would be interesting to see a live-action Death Note adaptation that was not about Light and L. Some manga properties have received more than enough anime and live-action adaptations already, yet they could still inspire other stories. Regardless of whether Parasyte: The Grey will carve its own niche, it is already one of Netflix’s most promising K-dramas and could be the next Sweet Home.
