Netflix’s One Day Perfectly Flips Leo Woodall’s Other Major TV Role

Netflix’s One Day Perfectly Flips Leo Woodall’s Other Major TV Role

Leo Woodall has recently been in the spotlight for his new Netflix series, One Day, wherein he plays Dexter, an attractive and charismatic young man with various bad habits, who is undeniably similar to Woodall’s other most recent role, Jack in The White Lotus season 2. Though Woodall’s career began back in 2019, he first entered the public eye when he played a featured role in the second season of The White Lotus. And though he won’t be returning to the anthology series, it seems that Woodall is continuing to make a name for himself with his new heartwrenching series.

One Day is a drama series based on a 2009 book of the same name by David Nicholls. The story received a movie adaptation in 2011 starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess. Now, Woodall stars in the Netflix series alongside Ambika Mod. The story follows Dexter and Emma, who meet at the University of Edinburgh and reunite on the same day, St. Swithin’s Day, over the course of twenty years. Though the pair have an undeniable attraction to each other, their lives continue to diverge, forcing them to focus on other things. Ultimately, their love story ends in tragedy.

One Day Timeline: Everything That Happens Off-Screen To Dex & Emma Between Each Year

Emma and Dexter are only shown once every year, but there are some important details in their relationship timeline that occur off-screen.

One Day’s Dex Has Similarities To Leo Woodall’s The White Lotus Character

For those who have seen Leo Woodall in both The White Lotus and One Day, the similarities between his characters are undeniable. In The White Lotus, Woodall plays Jack. A charming young man from Essex, Jack is exactly the kind of spontaneous and exciting character that Portia needs to enjoy her Italian vacation. Jack is suave, attractive, and lives a bit on the dangerous side. However, this risky charm quickly becomes terrifying when Portia discovers that Jack has been lying about who he is and why he is in Italy. In many respects, One Day’s Dexter is the same.

Though Dexter is not hiding any violent or criminal secrets, he definitely has the same allure as Jack does in The White Lotus. While Emma is a more shy and introverted character, Dexter oozes charisma and confidence. That is what makes him so attractive in the first place. Furthermore, their differences make them a good match, though it also causes tension. Like Jack, Dexter’s personality can be either exhilarating or scary. When his habits become too out of control, Emma must distance herself from Dexter. Overall, Dexter and Jack walk a very similar line between engaging and problematic.

One Day’s Dex Is The Story Leo Woodall Couldn’t Do On The White Lotus

One big difference between The White Lotus and One Day that draws a line between Jack and Dexter is that Dexter gets his full story told. While Jack is only a minor character in The White Lotus, Dexter is the co-lead of One Day. Therefore, Dexter’s story is a lot more in depth, while Jack only gets a brief arc showing his progression from good to bad.

Beyond that, Dexter is also given a far more complex range of emotions and situations than Jack.

This ultimately makes Dexter a better character than Jack. The White Lotus’ ending makes Jack a villain more than anything else. Without context, backstory, or a redemption arc, he remains static to the audience. However, Dexter is completely different. One Day depicts him over the course of 20 years, showing his highs and lows. In general, this makes him a much fuller and more relatable character. Unlike Jack, audiences can see where Dexter is coming from and reach an understanding about him. If Jack had received the same treatment, he and Dexter likely would have been even more similar.

Now that Leo Woodall has caught audiences’ attention with The White Lotus and proved his acting abilities in One Day, many want to know what project he will come up with next. While Woodall can clearly ace a cool and confident character, it would certainly be interesting to see him do something a bit different. At this time, Woodall has three projects in the near future, all without release dates. He is starring in two movies called Nomad and A Waiter in Paris. Furthermore, he has the lead role of Edward Brooks in an upcoming thriller series, Prime Target.

It is safe to say that there will be no shortage of Leo Woodall content in the upcoming year. Not only that, but the English actor is appearing in genres that audiences have yet to see him in. Overall, Leo Woodall could become a truly big star if he continues impressing viewers with his charm and acting abilities like in One Day and The White Lotus.
