Netflix’s Bridgerton Trailer: Gossip Girl Meets Jane Austen In New Shondaland Show

Netflix releases the Bridgerton TV show trailer, teasing the new project created by Shonda Rhimes and her production company Shondaland in partnership with the streaming service. The previously announced drama is based on Julia Quinn’s novel series of the same name, which takes place during the Regency era of London. Shondaland has been behind several of the most impactful television shows of the past decade, and Bridgerton is just the next in a long list of notable stories from the company.

The Bridgerton trailer for the television adaptation was posted earlier today to the official Netflix YouTube channel. The teaser shows that the period piece will center around the mysterious character Lady Whistledown, who publishes a series of pamphlets exposing the secrets of London’s elite. Based on later footage in the trailer, these scandals will involve sex, lies, and a lot of beautiful ball gowns. You can watch the full Bridgerton trailer below.

As viewers have pointed out in the comments of this video, the story of Bridgerton seems to be a social drama following in the footsteps of popular shows like Gossip Girl, though it’s set in the Regency era in which many Jane Austen stories take place. Since Rhimes and her company Shondaland have produced other dramas like Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, this new series feels true to form for the production company. However, the time period and visual aesthetic of the show is likely to help Bridgerton stand out from the crowd and make an impact when it debuts this December.

Bridgerton releases Friday, December 25 on Netflix.
