Netflix’s Biggest Movie Of 2023 Isn’t What You’d Expect (& It’s Huge For An Upcoming Release)

The biggest movie on Netflix in 2023 isn’t one that anyone would expect, but it’s a good thing for an upcoming 2024 release. Netflix has been sharing more details about its viewership data in recent years, and the streaming platform has just revealed its most in-depth report about what its subscribers have been watching. The data, called What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report, covers more than 18,000 titles, with both original and licensed films, and nearly 100 billion hours viewed. The most surprising information found in the report is the title of Netflix’s most-watched film of the year.

Over the years, Netflix has invested more and more in becoming an established name as a production company in the entertainment industry, paying big money to get A-list actors to star in their productions. Some of the films have succeeded, and even won big awards. Throughout 2023, Netflix has released many big films, including You People, Murder Mystery 2, Extraction 2, Luther: The Fallen Sun, and more major releases. However, Netflix’s engagement report is exciting news for what’s to come in 2024.

Jennifer Lopez’s The Mother Was Netflix’s Biggest Movie Of 2023

Its success happened despite its mixed reception.

The engagement report What We Watched revealed that the Jennifer Lopez movie The Mother was Netflix’s most popular title of 2023, even more so than the highly anticipated sequel to Extraction or any other major releases. The Mother was viewed for 249.9 million hours (via Netflix), and while this is unexpected, it was hinted at several times throughout the year. An action-packed, intense revenge thriller with an impeccable cast, The Mother broke Netflix’s streaming record and had its best opening weekend for a film. The Mother even pushed Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman out of the top 10 in its first weekend.

Despite its mixed response from the critics, with a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Jennifer Lopez’s movie became very popular with audiences. Revenge thrillers have become increasingly more in demand since John Wick, and Lopez headlining the film and Niki Caro at the helm guaranteed The Mother would be at least entertaining. Besides quality action, the film also balances emotional moments and thrills throughout its almost two-hour runtime. Due to its success, there has been talk of a sequel, or even turning The Mother into a franchise. There’s no official announcement for The Mother 2, but the first film’s popularity is great for both Netflix and Lopez moving forward.

The Mother‘s success is good news for Netfix’s future collaboration with Jennifer Lopez. The actress and singer will star alongside Simu Liu in Atlas, a sci-fi action film with Brad Peyton at the helm, and although it doesn’t have an official release date, it’s likely to come out in 2024. Based on The Mother‘s viewership record, Lopez’s upcoming film could replicate this success, and be the start of a larger collaboration with Netflix. Before starring in The Mother, Lopez released her documentary Halftime on Netflix in 2022, and Atlas will be a good way to continue their partnership.
