Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Release Date Confirmed

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Release Date Confirmed

At long last, Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender has a release date. First announced back in 2018, the upcoming adaptation has suffered a long road to the small screen, with production delays and producer exits frequently pushing it back. Avatar: The Last Airbender finally began filming in 2021, with newcomer Gordon Cormier taking on the lead role of Aang, the eponymous Avatar who holds the fate of his world in his 12-year-old hands. Netflix has been steadily hyping the series, but only recently has it finally revealed when viewers can see it for themselves.

Announced as part of its Geeked Week celebrations, Netflix has confirmed that Avatar: The Last Airbender now has a release date of February 22, 2024. This came alongside the release of a new trailer offering the best look yet at the live-action show’s cast and settings, which can be seen below:

Avatar: The Last Airbender’s Release Date Is Perfect

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Release Date Confirmed

Considering how it once seemed that Netflix’s take on Avatar: The Last Airbender would debut in 2023, it may be disappointing to some that the show is still over three months away. However, the early 2024 date is perfect. For one thing, much of this year has seen writers and actors stuck on strike as they battled studios over fair wages and working conditions. This meant many projects went by without any promotion from its stars, dimming the excitement of their releases. Now that both the writers and actors strikes are at an end, the full Avatar: The Last Airbender cast can get involved with hyping up the show.

Beyond that, there’s another show slated to debut on streaming at the end of this year that could attract a similar audience. Disney+’s highly-anticipated Percy Jackson and the Olympians will premiere in late December, and on the surface, it has a lot in common with Avatar: The Last Airbender. Both properties originally targeted younger demographics in the early 2000s, and they had movie adaptations that failed to impress those fond of the source material. Plus, they depict expansive and beloved fantasy worlds, and they both have witty 12-year-olds at their center.

While it’s unlikely Percy Jackson would’ve completely stolen Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s thunder had they come out at the same time, the staggered premiere dates will ensure both get ample attention from audiences. Netflix is notoriously difficult to impress when it comes to viewership numbers, so if Avatar: The Last Airbender has any hope of reaching season 2, it’ll need to be a sweeping success. With a release date set in place, it won’t be long before the long-awaited series finally arrives.
