Netflix’s #1 Movie Right Now Is A Complete 180 Of A Popular Sitcom Character

Netflix’s newest romantic comedy, Players, is a subtle 180 of a character from a very popular sitcom. Netflix’s catalog of movies from different genres keeps expanding every week, and among its most recent and successful additions is Players. Directed by Trish Sie and written by Whit Anderson, Players takes viewers to New York City to meet Mack (Gina Rodriguez), a sportswriter who, along with her friends, comes up with elaborate but successful hook-up schemes to help each other get dates and more.

One day, Mack meets Nick (Tom Ellis), a war correspondent and author who she’s very attracted to. After one night together, Mack decides she wants to be in a relationship with Nick, and so she and Adam (Damon Wayans Jr.), Bran (August Prew), Little (Joel Courtney), and Ashley (Liza Koshy) come up with a brand new plan to make it happen. Out of all of them, Mack is closest to Adam, whom she has known for years and even dated at some point, and Adam is a complete 180 of a popular sitcom character played by Wayans Jr.: New Girl’s Coach.

It’s explained in Players that Mack, Bran, and Adam have known each other for years and thus have helped each other get dates and hook-ups countless times, but there’s an undeniably special bond between Adam and Mack. Their connection is so strong that Adam knows right away when Mack isn’t feeling well, he was there for her during truly difficult times and knew the type of partner she liked and the type she deserved. To everyone’s surprise, Adam was the one who needed their hook-up schemes the least, and he successfully got a date without his friends’ help.

Adam, then, is a complete flip from one of Wayans Jr.’s most popular and beloved characters: Coach, from New Girl. Coach moved out of the loft after New Girl’s pilot episode, but that one appearance quickly established that Coach wasn’t the best at talking to women, and he was so blunt that he came off as insensitive or too aggressive. Coach returned in New Girl season 3 and viewers got to know him more, but he still was pretty awkward when it came to talking to women and dating them. Adam, on the other hand, was more confident and subtle, and pretty much what Coach struggled to be.

Unfortunately, Coach didn’t stay until the very end of New Girl and left again at the end of season 4, though he made guest appearances in subsequent seasons. After going on a date with Cece (that made Schmidt quite jealous), Coach met a woman named May who initially rejected him for his cheesy pick-up lines, but they kept coming across during Coach and friends’ bar crawl. May was a fellow army brat and they realized they missed each other by a year or two while traveling the country growing up, and so they started dating.

Coach moved to New York with May at the end of New Girl season 4 when she got a job at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and it’s mentioned in season 6 that Coach and May moved to North Carolina and took in a foreign exchange student. As for Adam, he and Mack realize they are in love with each other at the end of Players, and so they officially get together.
