Although the third season of House of Cards only just debuted on Netflix (read our review of the premiere), the streaming service has many other new and returning series coming down the pike. Daredevil will premiere in April; it’s the first of four Marvel shows set to debut on Netflix before a Defenders mini-series event. Following Daredevil, a third season of Orange is the New Black is on the way in addition to some new series.
Also coming to Netflix is Sense8, a sci-fi show from Andy and Lana Wachowski (Jupiter Ascending), as well as a prequel series to Wet Hot American Summer subtitled First Day At Camp. Now, Netflix has announced premiere dates for these two new shows as well as the returning Orange is the New Black and other series.
Deadline is reporting that upcoming shows Sense8 and Wet Hot American Summer: First Day At Camp as well as returning series Orange is the New Black will debut new seasons this summer. The first season of the Wachowski’s Sense8 will premiere June 5th with season 3 of Orange is the New Black releasing a week later on June 12th. The prequel series of cult-favorite film Wet Hot American Summer will hit the streaming service the following month on July 17th.
Netflix also announced the release dates of three original stand-up specials and that Canadian sci-fi drama Between will premiere sometime in May. Chris D’Elia: Incorrigible will debut April 17th, Jen Kirkman: I’m Gonna Die Alone (And I Feel Fine) on May 22nd, and What Happened, Miss Simone on June 26th.
Given these new release dates, it’s safe to assume the streaming service is working toward the goal mentioned by Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos of premiering a new or returning show every three weeks. Additionally, with many other series in the works (including a live-action version of The Legend of Zelda) and an expansion into original movies, the company is certainly aiming to churn out much more content.
Of course, despite Netflix’s successful venture into original series – House of Cards and Orange is the New Black have garnered strong fanbases as well as critical acclaim – many users return to the service for its non-original content. Even though the company has increased the number of original series that will premiere, these must stand up against shows like Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead.
Since Netflix is still relatively new to content-creation, it may be some time before we know if it can sustain itself and rival TV networks as well as movie studios. Until then, the streaming service will continue drawing in viewers with intriguing programs (like Orange is the New Black and Sense8) that simply cannot be seen elsewhere.
