Netflix Has The Perfect Million Jake Gyllenhaal Movie To Watch After Road House’s Remake

Warning! Contains spoilers for Road House (2024).

A $95 million Jake Gyllenhaal movie, which is available on Netflix for streaming, is the perfect film to watch after the Road House remake. Directed by Doug Liman, Amazon’s Road House reimagines the narrative of the eponymous 1989 film by not only giving it a contemporary twist but also adding more depth to some of its main character beats. Although the film was initially met with some skepticism when it was first announced, it has surprisingly received a positive response from viewers and critics.

Like most modern films, Road House also features a post-credits scene that paves the way for potential follow-ups. While Amazon will likely take some time to confirm whether Road House will receive a sequel, viewers who enjoyed the film should watch another action drama on Netflix. The Netflix film also stars Jake Gyllenhaal and even features several white-knuckling fight scenes like Road House.

Jake Gyllenhaal puts his fighting skills on full display during his combat scenes against Conor McGregor in Amazon’s Road House. However, long before he stepped in Dalton’s shoes, Gyllenhaal portrayed a boxer named Billy Hope in Southpaw. Viewers who enjoyed the actor’s compelling performance in Amazon’s Road House should check out Southpaw on Netflix because it showcases how Gyllenhaal can perfectly embody two characters with similar combat sports backgrounds but completely different stories. While there are some similarities between Southpaw‘s Hope and Road House‘s Dalton, many aspects of Hope’s story make Southpaw more devastating than Road House.

Southpaw Is A Far More Devastating Movie To Watch Than Road House 2024

Unlike Road House, which follows an original storyline and barely takes itself too seriously, Southpaw presents a poignant sports drama loosely based on Eminem’s life. Billy Hope’s struggles as a boxer in Southpaw serve as a metaphor for Eminem’s battles with fame and personal demons. Similar to how Eminem was a misfit in the hip-hop scene as a white rapper, Gyllenhaal’s Hope is also portrayed as a boxer who adopts an unconventional southpaw stance.

Eminem also had to overcome several challenges and stumbling blocks before making it big as a rapper. Southpaw depicts this by establishing that Billy Hope takes a lot of hits in each fight before winning through knockout. Drawing inspiration from Eminem’s familial relationship, Southpaw also draws a tear-jerking picture of Billy Hope’s failing relationship with his daughter after he loses his wife due to his own mistakes before redeeming him by portraying how he gathers the strength to fight for his daughter despite hitting rock bottom.
