Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor Will Battle Toymaker’s Minions In Future Episodes, Teases Showrunner

Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies has revealed that Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor will be fighting the Toymaker’s minions in a future episode of the show. The Toymaker was the central antagonist of the show’s 60th anniversary specials, but was banished by the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Doctors working together. However, the villain teased a “legion” would be hunting for the Doctor, unknown threats that will be seeking revenge.

Speaking on a Doctor Who: Video Commentaries for the final special, “The Giggle,” Davies teased the Toymaker’s minions will be featured in Doctor Who season 14 and beyond. Talking with Fourteenth Doctor actor David Tennant and executive producer Phil Collinson, the showrunner explained how these threats may show up in multiple future seasons. Davies: You know, David, he says at the end, “My legions are coming.”

Tennant: Yes.

Davies: They are. And so, every so often we get a chance to do an episode that’s kind-of supernatural, not exactly supernatural, but where all the rules are suspended.

Tennant: Yes, yes. That’s what so creepy about this one.

Davies: Exactly. So, there’s been a couple of episodes where we’ve just gone, “Right, now it’s this.” So, he’s like a pantheon of gods.

Tennant: Right

Davies: And we’re going to keep doing it, aren’t we? We love it.

Collinson: How many have we had now? Three?

Davies: We’re on our third now. Just every so often.

Collinson: More to come.

Davies: It breaks the budget every time!

Collinson: We love them, though. They just give it a different flavour, don’t they?

How Big A Threat Will The Toymaker’s Minions Be?

Davies’ confirmation the antagonists’ dangerous allies are coming shows the villain’s threat will have consequences throughout Gatwa’s run as the Doctor. Given the Toymaker’s ability to manipulate reality and create his own worlds, it’s likely his so-called “legions” have similar abilities. If the Fifteenth Doctor is forced to fight multiple beings like him at the same time, then it could prove to be the most difficult battle the character has ever faced.

However, it’s possible Gatwa’s Doctor won’t have to face these being on his own. Since the Fifteenth Doctor came from bi-generation, it means Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor is still around, currently enjoying a quiet life in Paris. While this seems to give his story a proper conclusion, the threat of the Toymaker’s minions could launch him out of retirement for another adventure alongside the main Doctor.

Since the Toymaker has only just been defeated, though, it’s unclear when his minions will arrive to fight the Doctor. However, since Gatwa’s adventures are about to begin, it would make sense for Doctor Who season 14 to feature these new villains in some capacity. Just how important they’ll be to the Fifteenth Doctor’s story will be revealed as his adventures begin.
