Navarro’s Ambiguous True Detective Season 4 Ending Explained By Star & Showrunner

Warning! Spoilers ahead for the True Detective: Night Country finale.

True Detective: Night Country‘s ambiguous ending for Evangeline Navarro gets an explanation from showrunner Issa López and star Kali Reis. Serving as season 4 of HBO’s hit crime drama, Reis and Jodie Foster lead the True Detective: Night Country cast as detectives Navarro and Liz Danvers, respectively. The latest iteration of the series came to an end this past Sunday, leaving things open-ended for Navarro, who is shown walking out onto the ice in the Alaskan wilderness.

In a recent interview with Deadline, López and Reis share their thoughts regarding Navarro’s final moments in the True Detective: Night Country finale. Check out their comments below:

Issa López: “I’m not saying that she’s alive, and I’m certainly not saying that she’s dead. I very carefully crafted this as an ink block test for you to discover yourself as an audience member. I do love that Navarro states very early in the series that she has this impulse to just walk away and leave everything behind.

“On the other hand, the entire series is an exploration of the fact that she feels a calling to the beyond. In the climax of the finale, and instead of fighting it and going in with pain and fear, she surrenders to it. And in doing it, she receives a piece of herself. So that call that she was afraid of is solved.

“The Aboriginal people in Australia go and walk about, find themselves and then come back, which is I think is what Kali embraced [for the character]. However, there is a chance that she is also going to be with the women before her to visit them. You can read it both ways and it’s up to you to interpret which one fulfills your heart.”

Kali Reis: “I left it open. I think her sister was the one thread holding Navarro together. Navarro wouldn’t go all the way off the deep end because she had somebody to worry about. So once she’s gone, there’s nothing else holding her. She can go off the deep end. She can beat the shit out of these guys and not even care. She can just dive into things.

“So I like to think that regardless of her decision to walk into the ice like her sister does, I don’t think she does that. I think she just goes off into a place where she can be herself without any responsibilities. And if she did either walk into the ice like her sister or stay around, the only person she would ever come back to see, whether it’s in the spirit world or physical world, would be Danvers.”
