Natasha Liu Bordizzo Defends Sabine’s Jedi Arc In Ahsoka

Ahsoka star Natasha Liu Bordizzo has defended Sabine Wren’s transformation from Mandalorian to Mandalorian Jedi. In the Ahsoka finale, Sabine finally accesses the Force after trying and failing for the entire season. This caused some backlash, as some fans felt that this retconned the purpose of the midi-chlorians. However, Sabine’s live-action actress disagrees.

Here is how to watch all Star Wars movies and TV shows chronologically and in order of release, and how each fits into the Star Wars timeline.

When speaking about her character on the Dagobah Dispatch podcast, Bordizzo explained the importance of Sabine’s Jedi arc as a metaphor for life. As Bordizzo puts it, Sabine’s struggle to connect with the Force symbolizes the human desire to achieve peace. According to Bordizzo, this is why it was necessary that Sabine didn’t “always finish the fight in a cool way.” Her journey is messy, and it isn’t until the stakes are high enough that she’s finally able to unlock that part of herself. For Bordizzo, this parallels life beautifully.

How Ahsoka Demonstrated Sabine’s Growth In The Force

During the interview, Natasha Liu Bordizzo also said the fight with the bandits was a key moment because Sabine started out trying to fight like she always did, and was losing. It wasn’t until after she drew her lightsaber and had to try to focus on the person she wanted to become that she was able to make a connection. This is not only a great metaphor for life, but it is also true to Sabine’s character and honors her history. After all, learning to use the Force through battle is such a Mandalorian way to grow in the Force.

While Sabine’s Jedi arc received mixed reviews due to her implied low midi-chlorian count, it isn’t as much of a retcon as it appears at first glance. After all, Star Wars has made it clear that all lifeforms contain midi-chlorians. While a higher count means a stronger connection to the Force and thus an easier time accessing it, this does not necessarily mean that it is impossible for someone with a lower count to use the Force with enough training. Further, Ahsoka did show that Sabine had a significantly harder time than someone with a higher midi-chlorian count.

It will be interesting to see Sabine’s journey in Ahsoka season 2. Now that she officially has access to the Force, she is sure to grow in power. Just how powerful she will become and how rocky the rest of her journey will be, however, remains to be seen. Given how much she has struggled up to this point, it’s possible that it will continue to be an uphill battle.
