My Little Pony Film Casts Vanessa Hudgens & James Marsden

Vanessa Hudgens and James Marsden have joined the cast of Netflix’s My Little Pony: A New Generation. Hudgens previously found success with the streamer’s movie The Princess Switch and its 2020 sequel. James Marsden is no stranger to children’s entertainment, acting opposite Sonic the Hedgehog last year. The project was due for a theatrical release but switched to Netflix after becoming one of many films delayed by COVID-19.

As per The Wrap, Hudgens and Marsden will lend their voices to the new My Little Pony film. According to the plot summary, Hudgens will portray “Earth Pony Sunny” who is determined to “bring enchantment and unity” back to Equestria. Hudgens’ character undergoes an enthralling journey and on the way meets “the ever-responsible fellow Earth Pony Hitch” (Marsden). Other actors providing voice work for the upcoming movie include Elizabeth Perkins, Sofia Carson, Liza Koshy, Phil LaMarr, Ken Jeong, Jane Krakowski, and Michael McKean.

My Little Pony fans (better known as Bronies) will be pleased to learn this project is moving forward. The new film is set to be the start of the fifth incarnation of the franchise, while also serving as a direct follow-up to the 2010 toy line. Considering her career in children’s programming including High School Musical, Hudgens is a perfect choice to shepherd this transition. Those who enjoy Marsden’s work may scratch their heads at the actor’s decision to follow up Westworld with this movie, but he’s thrived in family-friendly fare like Enchanted. Audiences will be able to see Hudgens and Marsden’s characters in action when My Little Pony: A New Generation releases on September 24.
