“My Juilliard”: Charles Melton Reflects On Riverdale As He Earns Awards Buzz For May December

Charles Melton reflects on Riverdale as he earns awards buzz for his performance in May December. The actor stars in the new Netflix film from director Todd Haynes as Joe Yoo – a man who, as a 13-year-old boy, was involved in a notorious tabloid romance with a 36-year-old woman, Gracie (Julianne Moore). Twenty years later, an actress played by Natalie Portman arrives to research for her role as Gracie, which causes her marriage to Joe to buckle under the pressure. Melton’s performance has been earning awards buzz, including a Golden Globe nomination.

Before May December, Melton was widely known for his role as the lovable jock Reggie Mantle on Riverdale, which ended in August 2023. In an interview with i-D after his Golden Globe nomination for May December, Melton reflected on Riverdale, which he called his own “Juilliard,” referring to the prestigious performing arts school in New York City. Read his full comments below:

Obviously it frees up more time for projects like May December, but I learned so much being there. I formed relationships that I will have until the end of my days. It really helped me refine this work ethic. Riverdale truly was my Juilliard – I was learning and growing and playing and taking risks. I was allowed to do that. We just had our final season, so you know, it’s… It’s bittersweet. But I’m so happy it brought joy to so many people.

For May December, Melton received a Golden Globe nomination for “Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture.” In this category, Melton is competing against Mark Ruffalo for Poor Things, Robert De Niro for Killers of the Flower Moon, Robert Downey Jr. for Oppenheimer, Ryan Gosling for Barbie, and Willem Dafoe for Poor Things. Despite this stiff competition, Melton has a real shot at winning the Golden Globe since he’s already won a few precursor awards, including the Gotham Independent Film Award and the New York Film Critics Award.

Charles Melton’s Best Supporting Actor Win For May December Would Make Oscars History

Charles Melton is a strong contender for an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for May December. If he also won, it would be groundbreaking.

At this point, Melton is likely to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2024 Oscars, where he’s also expected to compete with the likes of Ruffalo, De Niro, Downey Jr., and Gosling. If Melton wins, he would make Oscar history by marking the first time the award has gone to an actor of Asian descent two years in a row, following Ke Huy Quan for Everything Everywhere All at Once. As a potential first-time nominee, Melton may be a long shot to win the Oscar, but for an actor with roots on Riverdale, being nominated is surely an honor.
