“My Brother’s Was Original”: Ridley Scott’s True Feelings About Top Gun: Maverick Reportedly Revealed

Ridley Scott’s true feelings about Top Gun: Maverick have reportedly been revealed after producer Jerry Bruckheimer claimed he liked the sequel. Released in 1986, the original Top Gun was directed by the late Tony Scott and introduced audiences to Tom Cruise as the young hotshot pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Nearly four decades later, Cruise returned to reprise his role in Top Gun: Maverick which, directed by Joseph Kosinski, was another big box office success, but the sequel was also acclaimed by critics with many calling it better than the original.

Ridley Scott, the director of iconic films like Alien and Bladerunner and the brother of Tony Scott, was among those who liked Top Gun: Maverick, according to producer Jerry Bruckheimer. However, his true feelings about the sequel have now been reportedly revealed. In a new interview with Variety, Fede Álvarez, who directed the new Alien movie, revealed that he asked Ridley Scott what he thought about Top Gun: Maverick, and he responded, “Meh… My brother’s was original and this is like eh.” Read what Álvarez shared below:

I wanted him to see it before anybody. And everyone gave me the head’s up that Ridley is really tough. He’s really tough, particularly if it has something to do with his movies. He was really tough on Blade Runner [2049], which I thought was a masterpiece, and he had issues with it because it’s really hard for him because it’s his work. I asked him about the new Top Gun and he’s like “meh.” I’m like, “What are you talking about?” And he was like, “My brother’s was original and this is like eh.” He really respected it, but you could see how tough he was. So I was like, “There’s no way I win this one.”

“My Brother’s Was Original”: Ridley Scott’s True Feelings About Top Gun: Maverick Reportedly Revealed

Last April, just before Top Gun: Maverick‘s release in theaters in May, producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that Ridley Scott saw the sequel and that he liked it. Bruckheimer claimed that Scott was “laudatory in his praise for the film,” and that he especially liked how the sequel honored his late brother. Over a year later, Ridley Scott’s feelings about Top Gun: Maverick, as relayed by Álvarez, sound drastically different. However, it is understandable why Scott might be ambivalent about the sequel to his brother’s iconic film.

Top Gun: Maverick was dedicated to the memory of Tony Scott, so it’s understandable that Ridley Scott had an emotional reaction to how the legacy sequel honored his late brother. However, over a year later, Scott’s more honest assessment of Top Gun: Maverick appears to have come out during a private conversation with Álvarez. The original Top Gun is one of the most iconic and culturally relevant movies from the 1980s, and for those who have a close connection to it like Ridley Scott, Top Gun Maverick, no matter how good it is, will never be able to top it.
