The success of WB’s crossover fighting game MultiVersus – which features the likes of Bugs Bunny and the Tazmanian Devil – shows that a new Looney Tunes game is long overdue. The free-to-play beta – MultiVersus‘ soft launch – recently dropped and players are eagerly trying out this Super Smash Bros.-style game and battling against other players worldwide. While this multiverse fighting experience features many beloved Warner Bros. icons, the inclusion of popular cartoon characters shows what gaming has been missing, with no major Looney Tunes titles having dropped over the last decade.
MultiVersus is one of many platform fighting games to allow players to pick between a large number of recognizable characters. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate raised the bar in 2018 when it comes to crossover fighting game rosters, spawning many other games that aimed to capitalize on similar success, including Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. There has been talk of MultiVersus potentially competing with Smash Bros. thanks to its free-to-play model and selection of IPs, and its early popularity could be a testament to that.
The free-to-play MultiVersus roster brings characters like Batman, Shaggy, Arya Stark, Bugs Bunny, Taz, and many other familiar faces together to battle it out in teams of one or two. While MultiVersus is expected to regularly update with new characters, the return of playable Looney Tunes characters highlights the need for more games set within the popular cartoon universe. After all, the last game to do so launched in 2018 and unfortunately, was only made available for iOS and Android devices. Now, with the overwhelming popularity of MultiVersus, perhaps Warner Bros. will consider the popularity of the Looney Tunes and develop a new game featuring one or more of them as the lead.
Why A New Looney Tunes Game Needs To Happen
The Looney Tunes haven’t had too many gaming successes to their name, but there are some notable exceptions. Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters is fondly remembered, as is Looney Tunes: Sheep Raider and Looney Tunes: Space Race. The popularity and positive reviews of Looney Tunes: World of Mayhem showcase that not only do Looney Tunes games perform quite well but that there is also a demand for them. Whether it’s a turn-based RPG, a platform fighting style game, or an action-adventure game, there are plenty of Merry Melodies appreciators who are eager to play a game dedicated to putting players within the wacky and creative Looney Tunes world.
It’s unclear whether or not Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has plans to back the development of a game set within the Looney Tunes, and even less is known about when fans might expect such a game. But for now, fans of the popular cartoon series can play as either Bugs Bunny or Taz in MultiVersus. Perhaps as the game receives new updates, more Looney Tunes characters like Daffy Duck, Sylvester, and Tweety will arrive in the multiversal-fighting game in the foreseeable future.
