MTG Showcases Savage New Planeswalker Covers in Preview for Magic #2

The world of Magic: The Gathering goes green with a new set of Planeswalker variant covers released from BOOM! Studios. Following on the success of Magic #1, the second issue enlists top-tier talent to reimagine its nature-tuned Planeswalkers for the world of comic books. In a new preview, readers are given a glimpse of these exciting new covers as well as hints about where this new take on the world’s most popular trading card game could go.

In the aftermath of MTG’s epic War of the Spark expansion, Magic #1 from writer Jed MacKay and artist Ig Guara, focusses on the three Planeswalkers Ral Zarek, Vraska, and Kaya. After assassins attack the trio as well as the series’ mascot Jace, the three Guildmasters are left wondering who exactly attacked them and why. Now, in issue 2, readers see them come together to compare notes on a mystery that could have vast implications on the multiverse at large.

In addition to the preview of the issue itself though, readers are also treated to a sneak peek at a set of Planeswalker variant covers. The covers from artists Daniel Warren Johnson, Jahnoy Lindsay, and Michael Walsh depict three of the game’s green-mana-aligned Planeswalkers. Much like the last issue’s focus on black-mana Planeswalkers, these covers depict one of the comic series’ main characters (in this case the gorgon Vraska) as well as two characters who probably won’t make an appearance in the comic itself; here Garruk and Vivien. The artwork provides a unique look at characters well-known to longtime fans of the card game. Take a look at the variant covers as well as the preview pages below!

Of note in the provided preview pages is how the three main characters interact. Ral, Vraska, and Kaya are all very different Planeswalkers, and it’s telling that their personalities are already clashing before they’ve even properly set out on the multiversal road trip promised by the comic. Despite its status as non-canon to the game’s story, these preview pages continue the fun-character work and expressive artwork which made the first issue of Magic so much fun to read.

With powerful character dynamics and a set of gorgeous variant covers, Magic #2 is already shaping up to be a must-read for fans of Magic: the GatheringBOOM! Studios and the creative staff behind the book are clearly fans of the source material as the elements which make the game’s world so intriguing are present on every page of this preview. Look for Magic #2 when it releases in May!
