The stars of Ms. Marvel revealed the cast got matching tattoos following the last day of shooting. The upcoming Disney+ series based on the Marvel Comics character Kamala Khan, otherwise known as Ms. Marvel, is scheduled to premiere in 2022 as part of the MCU’s Phase 4. Created by Bisha K. Ali, development on Ms. Marvel began in 2019, with filming having concluded earlier this year. Slated to be the sixth television series produced by Marvel and sharing continuity with other films in the franchise, the show will follow a young fan of Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and the Avengers, Khan, who struggles to fit in until she finds herself possessing powers of her own.
Ms. Marvel is intended to set up a continuation for the character in another upcoming project The Marvels. Playing the titular 16-year-old Pakistani-American superhero is Iman Vellani, who leads a cast that includes Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, and Laurel Mardsen. Throughout much of its early marketing, Marvel has reiterated the excitement surrounding Khan’s entrance into the MCU. Vellani’s casting and the universal story of her character has meant a lot to those involved with the series. Though newer to the comics, her ability to draw attention from so many fans led to a rapid popularity and desire to see Ms. Marvel portrayed on screen.
The cast of Ms. Marvel attended the premiere of Spiderman: No Way Home and in a brief interview with Variety, two of its stars, Yasmeen Fletcher and Laurel Mardsen, revealed what they did to commemorate working on the series. With newcomer Vellani returning in The Marvels, fans of her character, as well as the show, will get the chance to see more of Ms. Marvel‘s cast in the upcoming film. Actors Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur will reprise their roles as Khan’s family members in The Marvels. The addition of Ms. Marvel in the MCU is another important step for the studio in terms of introducing new faces to the screen and diversifying their slate. The huge success of projects like Black Panther, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Eternals confirms that Marvel should start looking deeper into its comics catalog for new superheroes of all backgrounds and diversify the franchise.
The official first look at Kamala Khan’s costume and abilities from Disney+ Day has had fans buzzing and theorizing for a while now. The excitement surrounding the next stretch of Marvel’s television series and what they could mean for future movies continues with the introduction of Khan. The fact that the Ms. Marvel cast and crew felt connected enough to the series to get tattoos is very encouraging, showing that the upcoming Marvel/Disney+ project clearly has a lot of heart.
