Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie’s cast sees the return of fan-favorite characters from the TV show in addition to new names. Widely considered one of the best TV procedurals, Monk was a pioneer in its genre and would influence several shows that came after it. Monk’s original cast has now reunited for a movie set 14 years after Monk’s final episode, “Mr. Monk and the End.”

Monk’s online cast reunion in 2020, called Mr. Monk Shelters in Place, briefly explored the idea of how Adrian would be handling the COVID-19 pandemic. This was the inception of Mr. Monk’s Last Case, which revisits the beloved detective after a couple of difficult years. Those who watched the Monk TV show can now revisit its iconic characters in a cast led by Tony Shalhoub.

Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie isn’t too different from the show’s best episodes, but it never feels like it was made just to surf on nostalgia.

Tony Shalhoub as Adrian Monk

Five-time Emmy winner Tony Shalhoub returns to the role of Adrian Monk in Mr. Monk’s Last Case after playing the titular character from 2002 to 2009. Shalhoub starred in all 125 Monk episodes, crafting a charming character that would inspire many other TV detectives in crime procedurals. Mr. Monk’s Last Case revisits Adrian 14 years after the events of Monk’s finale, during which he finally solves Trudy’s murder. Although Monk was showing significant progress in his OCD treatment by the end of Monk, the COVID-19 pandemic affected him greatly. Monk is retired and has barely left the house since the pandemic started.

Ted Levine as Leland Stottlemeyer

Ted Levine, who played Buffalo Bill in the multi-Academy Award-winning film The Silence of the Lambs and has since been in movies such as Heat and Shutter Island, played Captain Leland Stottlemeyer in all seasons of Monk. Levine now returns as Stottlemeyer in the Monk movie but with a big difference. Leland Stottlemeyer retired from the police force a few years after Monk’s finale and is currently working in the private sector, namely as chief of security for a major company. Although Leland could not be happier with his new job, he soon realized that things might not be as perfect as they looked.

Traylor Howard as Natalie Teeger

Traylor Howard joined the cast of Monk in season 3 as Natalie Teeger, Adrian’s new assistant. Monk was expected to have a difficult job replacing Sharona, who had been in every episode of the series up until that point, yet Natalie quickly became a fan favorite. Howard would go on to play Natalie until Monk’s series finale. She is also known for her roles in movies such as Me, Myself & Irene and Son of the Mask. Natalie continued working for Monk for a couple of years after they solved Trudy’s murder but is now a real estate agent living in Atlanta.

Jason Gray-Stanford as Randy Disher

The lighthearted lieutenant who was always by Monk and Stottlemeyer’s side, Randy Disher, is now a sheriff in New Jersey. Randy is played by Jason Gray-Stanford, who starred in all seasons of Monk and is also known for his voice roles in franchises such as Dragon Ball Z and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Even though Sharona is not in the Monk movie, the film does not retcon the show’s ending and confirms that Randy and she are still married. Additionally, Randy and Sharona have just had a baby, which is why Monk’s first assistant could not attend the wedding.

Melora Hardin as Trudy Monk

Melora Hardin, best known for her role as Jan Levinson in The Office, reprises her role as Trudy Monk in Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. Hardin first played Trudy in Monk season 3, after the show moved production from Canada to the United States and recast the role first played by Stellina Rusich. Trudy died years before the events of the series, and all of her appearances were either in flashbacks or visions. This is also how Trudy appears in the Monk movie – Adrian continues to have visions of his wife, who often appears to give Monk moral support.

Hector Elizondo as Dr. Neven Bell

Prolific actor Hector Elizondo, who won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Dr. Phillip Watters in Chicago Hope, joined Monk in season 7 as Dr. Nevel Bell, Adrian’s new psychiatrist. Dr. Bell was the show’s replacement for Dr. Charles Kroger, whose actor, Stanley Kamel, sadly passed away in 2008. Although it takes a while before Adrian gets used to his new psychiatrist, Dr. Bell later becomes an essential part of Mr. Monk’s recovery. Monk still has weekly appointments with Dr. Bell in Mr. Monk’s Last Case, but the psychiatrist is now particularly worried about Adrian following the latest developments in the retired detective’s life.

Caitlin McGee as Molly

Trudy’s daughter from a relationship before she met Adrian. Molly first appeared in “Mr. Monk and the End,” where she was played by Alona Tal. The character is now portrayed by Caitlin McGee, most known for her roles as Sarah in Home Economics, Sue in Mythic Quest, and Sydney in Bluff City Law. Molly welcomed Adrian as part of her family and lived with him during the COVID-19 pandemic.

James Purefoy is Rick Eden

A tech billionaire who wants to be the first civilian to orbit the planet. Eden became the only owner of his company after his business partner mysteriously drowned during an expedition. James Purefoy has recently been in shows such as El Candidato, No Man’s Land, Pennyworth, Marie Antoinette, and Malpractice.

Austin Scott as Griffin

Molly’s fiancé. A journalist with a passion for bungee jumping, Griffin is working on a story that could expose billionaire Rick Eden for murder. Griffin is not afraid to confront Rick Eden at the beginning of Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie although he warns his fiancé that they have to be careful about someone that rich and powerful.
