Mothra’s Return In The Monsterverse Confirmed By Split-Second Godzilla X Kong Scene

Mothra’s Return In The Monsterverse Confirmed By Split-Second Godzilla X Kong Scene

The latest trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire provided evidence that one of Godzilla’s oldest and most beloved allies will make her triumphant return in the upcoming entry in the Monsterverse. The new trailer for Godzilla x Kong features some more clarity on the overall plot of the movie, and one of the key takeaways is the global magnitude of the threat that will make Godzilla and Kong’s dysfunctional relationship and alliance a necessity. It also focuses on the human characters a bit more, especially Jia, the young Iwi girl who Kong trusts and communicates with.

Given the nature of the threat that both Skar King and his mysterious, icy ally pose to the world, it’s natural to think that Godzilla and Kong won’t be the only Titans to stand in defense of the planet. The trailer reveals that Jia has terrifying visions that provide insight into the coming conflict that is so significant that it requires Kong to acquire a metal arm augmentation and Godzilla to evolve into a more powerful form. With so much on the line, the timing is ideal for the return of one of the Monsterverse’s original Guardian Titans, Mothra.

Based on how Godzilla vs Kong ends, Godzilla vs Kong 2 is set to be epic. Here’s everything we know, including potential story details.

Godzilla X Kong Trailer Confirms Mothra’s Return To The Monsterverse

Mothra’s adult form appears in a vision that Jia has about a world-ending threat.

Mothra's appears in Jia's eye as she has vision in Godzilla x Kong

Early in the new Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire trailer, Jia, the young Iwi girl who befriended Kong on Skull Island, is shown receiving a rapid series of terrifying visions, all of which relate to the rise of Skar King and the battle to stop him. At the 30-second mark, a brief image of Jia’s eye is shown, and reflected in her eye is an image of Mothra’s adult form. It’s mixed in with a number of other images of Titans and the destruction caused by them, but Mothra’s split-second appearance shows nothing more than her face.

Her appearance among a number of images of the upcoming conflict likely indicates that she will be involved in the final battle to rid the world of the threat posed by the Skar King and his allies. Mothra has a long-established history in the Toho films as a guardian of the Earth and a force for good, so it’s clear what side of any Titan conflict she would fall on. Her sacrifice in the Monsterverse changed Godzilla permanently, and echoes her role in many past iterations of the character.

It seems unlikely that Godzilla x Kong will simply redo her sacrifice, so she may turn the tide of the battle in another way. Unlike the Toho versions of the character, the Monsterverse’s Mothra is armed with a long and deadly stinger and some pointed legs that she’s not afraid to use in self-defense, although those seem as if they’d have little effect on either Skar King or Shimo, the ice dragon Titan who allies with the villainous ape. Mothra’s rebirth will likely play some role in how the conflict is resolved, making her quick appearance in Jia’s vision highly important despite its brevity.

How The Monsterverse Already Set Up Mothra’s Godzilla X Kong Appearance

Her return was teased as early as 2019.

Mothra’s return was teased in the end credits of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which featured a shot of a news article about Monarch finding a massive insect egg, complete with a speculative headline hinting that it could be another Mothra. That tease was followed in Godzilla vs. Kong with a brief moment showing the title of a podcast episode by Bernie Hayes, the Titan conspiracy theorist played by Brian Tyree Henry, titled “Mothra Pregnancy Theory”. Given that one of Mothra’s primary abilities is famously rebirth, it makes total sense that she’ll return for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
