Further evidence for the appearance of the giant insect Mothra has been found online, and it gives more hints at what to expect in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. As part of the Monsterverse, the mysterious Monarch Sciences group has been sharing images and clues as to what Godzilla may be up against in the 2019 film, and the latest one has just been released.
The Monarch department was introduced back in 2014’s original Godzilla and were instrumental in the events leading up to the gargantuan lizard fighting the two city-trashing monsters that were about to mate. They were also main players in Kong: Skull Island as represented by William Randa (John Goodman), who instigated the whole expedition to the titular location. It’s since been established that they are the S.H.I.E.L.D. of the Monsterverse and consist of international scientists tasked with tracking and stopping M.U.T.O.’s (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms). Of course sometimes this just means that they have to “let them fight”. During the post-credit sequence of Skull Island, the audience was granted glimpses of historical evidence of other monsters (well known to fans of the Toho Kaiju movies) that could be lurking beneath the surface of the Earth.
As part of a viral campaign and long build-up to Godzilla: King of Monsters, the websites and social media accounts belonging to the fictional Monarch group have been posting redacted and coded hints to the existence of these new monsters. The twitter account for Monarch Sciences has just posted what seems to be a photo of a stone bas-relief apparently from the “Temple of the Moth” in the Yucca province. It depicts a gigantic moth, flanked by two grub-like creatures and an egg-shaped cocoon.

Mothra first appeared in the 1961 Japanese monster movie of the same name, and was a huge (and apparently intelligent) imago moth, although it only grows into this form after hatching from a humongous cocoon, and causing some city-wide destruction in a thread-spraying caterpillar form. A recurring monster in the Toho Kaiju movies, the female creature would often be an ally to Godzilla but was sometimes the enemy. The inference from the viral image is that we will definitely see Mothra in all her glory in the upcoming film, and feasibly in her other two forms as well. While we’ve already seen a brief glimpse of the legendary moth in the previously mentioned post-credit sequence, along with Rodan and King Ghidorah, this is still a nice tease leading into further revelations of the other creatures no doubt.
Along with confirmation of multiple Kaiju in the official synopsis, and set photos already showing scenes of destruction, the film has an incredibly strong cast, including: Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Charles Dance, Sally Hawkins, Ziyi Zhang, Ken Watanabe, and many others. Director Michael Dougherty has all the ingredients here to make the ultimate monster movie and we’re certainly hoping that’s the case when Godzilla: King of the Monsters opens in 2019.
