Mortal Shell’s PS Plus Version Won’t Feature PS5 Upgrade

According to developer Cold Symmetry, the PS Plus version of Mortal Shell will not include enhancements on PS5. Sony confirmed last week that Mortal Shell is coming to PS Plus for the December 2021 lineup, which also features Godfall: Challenger Edition and Lego DC Super-Villains. The new additions to the subscription service go live tomorrow, December 7, meaning today marks the last day that members can claim November’s offers of Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, Knockout City, and First Class Trouble.

Limitations on the PS Plus iterations of games aren’t exactly new. Famously, Final Fantasy VII Remake players who accessed the game on PS5 through the service could only play the PS4 version. Godfall will soon sit in somewhat of a similar boat, given that the Challenger Edition denotes a build featuring endgame-exclusive content and no campaign missions. Now yet another upcoming PS Plus release will be limited in terms of its capabilities on the PlayStation 5.

Questions abound about December 2021’s PS Plus offers, particularly due to the aforementioned drama surrounding Godfall: Challenger Edition. As such, one hopeful Mortal Shell player took to Twitter to ask developer Cold Symmetry whether or not the PS Plus version of the action role-playing game would boast PS5 enhancements for owners of the console. To the dismay of many, the official Mortal Shell account confirmed that even PS5 players will only have access to the PS4 version if they claim the title through PlayStation Plus. The exchange appears in the tweets linked below:

Such news means two games in the PS Plus lineup for this month won’t live up to their fullest potential in one way or another. Why this continues to happen remains a mystery that’s unlikely to be solved anytime in the near future.

A punishing Soulslike, Mortal Shell wears its Dark Souls-esque qualities proudly on its sleeve. It does, however, subvert the genre in a fair few ways with fresh ideas all its own. Most notably, the “shell” aspect of the experience comes into play via a class-like system wherein players can inhabit the remains of deceased warriors. Donning a shell gives the protagonist access to unique abilities that allow users to experiment with their preferred style of play. Developers have continued to support the title with DLC and updates, one of which launched earlier this year as a free upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S boasting 4K and 60fps capabilities.

Mortal Shell is out now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S platforms.
