Screenwriter Jeremy Adams has revealed that he pitched a potential DC crossover for another animated Mortal Kombat movie. In recent years, the fighting game franchise has seen a resurgence on both the big and small screens. Following the commercial success of 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot, the franchise branched further out into the animated medium. Warner Bros. released the movie Scorpion’s Revenge the year before Mortal Kombat and followed up the animated title with two sequels, Battle of the Realms and Snow Blind.
In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Adams, who was the writer behind the three titles and multiple DC animated movies, revealed he once pitched a Mortal Kombat vs. DC crossover to WB. Despite the success of the previous movies, Adams indicated that not only was he “rebuffed” by the studio, but that he doesn’t believe there’s interest in producing further Mortal Kombat animated movies. I would lower your expectations. I don’t know if they have any plans to do more. I do know that we pitched that a while ago, but it was kind of rebuffed. Well, I think at the end of the day, I don’t know if they’re ever going to do any more. I hope they do, and I hope they call me to be involved. That would be great because I really love it. But I don’t know. I don’t know. I think it would be really cool though. Trust me, I would love to see a DC Mortal Kombat. That would be super, super cool.
Could MK vs DC Still Happen?
The two franchises first clashed in the video game Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe in 2008. Since then, the two have consistently crossed paths. Three years after the failed attempt at bringing the two together, the forgotten Batman Arkham City Lockdown mobile game featured Batman taking down Kano in a side mission. This would only be continued with numerous cameos between console games, as the DC fighting game franchise Injustice: Gods Among Us, also made by MK creators NetherRealm Studios, featured appearances from Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1 would feature Joker and Peacemaker, with Joker referencing MK vs DC in his interactions with characters.
With the Mortal Kombat Legends movies being hits and an Injustice animated movie also released, it would only seem logical that Adams would pitch the idea of bringing the two back together. The continuous crossovers in games most likely made him feel that WB would not shy away from a crossover of this magnitude. To his disappointment, and likely many others, they rejected it now, but that may not be the case forever. Beginning with the animated movie Creature Commandos, James Gunn and Peter Safran want to ensure that some animated DC films are a part of the new DCU. It’s possible that this crossover did not fit into their plans at the time, thus making WB wary of bringing the project to life.
Still, Gunn has confirmed that multiverse projects will be a part of the DC animated universe going forward. It is hard to decipher when Adams first pitched this project to WB, so it could have been prior to or during the Gunn and Safran takeover of DC. With the two having the final say over the use of DC characters, Peacemaker’s inclusion in Mortal Kombat 1 suggests they see the viability of the two intertwining. While audiences may not see a Mortal Kombat vs. DC movie in the near future, another game could be on the horizon.
