Mortal Kombat Creator Ed Boon Teases Marvel Characters In Funny Tweets

Mortal Kombat mastermind Ed Boon has made several funny Marvel references on social media recently, and it may be a sign of a crossover between NetherRealm Studio’s signature fighting franchise and the fabled House of Ideas. Mortal Kombat has seen its fair share of guest fighters from other popular media over the last few years, such as famed horror icons like Friday the 13th’s Jason Voorhees and the titular hero of the pulp ‘90s sci-fi film Robocop.

This even included classic comic book characters, with the worlds of Mortal Kombat and DC Comics clashing in 2008’s Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe and Mortal Kombat 11 featuring guest appearances by The Joker and Spawn. It has also worked in reverse, as classic Mortal Kombat stables like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Raiden have turned up as DLC fighters throughout NetherRealm’s DC-based Injustice series. However, Mortal Kombat has yet to make a crossover with Marvel Comics or vice versa, as the superhero juggernaut has mainly stuck to the Marvel Vs. Capcom series for its fighting game needs.

However, this might change soon, as Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has recently posted a few humorous Marvel-related messages on his Twitter page yesterday, featuring MCU movie quotes from such characters as Spider-Man, Thor, Iron Man and even Groot of the Guardians Of The Galaxy. This has led some fans to wonder if Boon is hinting at a Marvel-related project in the near future, or maybe even Marvel character or two appearing as guest fighters in a Mortal Kombat game. Check out Ed Boon’s Marvel tweets below:

At the moment, the Mortal Kombat series is entering a period of uncertainty as franchise owner AT&T is looking to sell Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, which has been publishing Mortal Kombat titles since 2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot. Meanwhile, Marvel has been enjoying a gaming renaissance over the past few years thanks to successful titles like Insomniac’s Spider-Man game and promising prospects, such as the Square Enix-developed Marvel’s The Avengers and the upcoming Marvel’s Iron Man VR.

Ed Boon could simply be having some online fun by bringing up a few of his favorite Marvel superheroes, but if his recent tweets are indeed a sign of a possible crossover between the famous comic book company and Mortal Kombat, then the timing couldn’t be better. While the specific characters Boon has mentioned might not be the best fit for his ultra-violent fighting franchise, darker Marvel icons like The Punisher or Ghost Rider would feel right at home in the bloody world of Mortal Kombat. This, of course, is assuming that Boon isn’t planning a full-blown Marvel fighting title like Injustice, which is certainly possible given recent hints that Netherrealm is working on a new franchise. Of course, the only person who knows for sure what Ed Boon’s tweets mean is Ed Boon himself.
