Mortal Kombat 2’s New Villain Pays Off A 27-Year-Old Deleted Scene From The Worst MK Movie

Quan Chi will be in Mortal Kombat 2, which is paying off a 27-year-old tease from the worst Mortal Kombat movie. There have been three live-action, theatrical Mortal Kombat films, one of which is much worse than the other two. There has yet to be a theatrical MK movie that succeeds both as an adaptation and as a film, although the 2021 reboot came close to delivering it. Assuming the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 improves upon its predecessor, it could easily be the best movie in the franchise.

The animated Mortal Kombat movies have so far been the best examples of how to bring the universe of the games to another medium. MK always had a strong history with animation, and one of the saga’s most important characters actually debuted in an animated series. Quan Chi, who will make his live-action debut as part of the Mortal Kombat 2 cast, first appeared in 1996’s Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm show before almost showing up in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation.

Multiple Mortal Kombat 2 set photos have been shared by actors and producers over the past weeks, and they reveal a lot about the upcoming sequel.

Quan Chi Was Supposed To Appear In Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

Annihilation premiered in 1997

A deleted scene from Mortal Kombat: Annihilation sees Shinnok meeting with Quan Chi in another realm after the events of the movie. The scene was supposed to be placed at the very end of the film, teasing that Earthrealm was still not safe, and that Quan Chi and Shinnok would eventually return. The idea was for Mortal Kombat 3 to happen, so it would make sense to have a sequel hook at the end of Annihilation. However, the scene was not included in the final cut, meaning Quan Chi never actually appeared in a theatrical Mortal Kombat movie.

Annihilation’s Quan Chi also appears in a couple of promotional stills from the movie, all of which seem to have come from the same deleted sequence. It is unclear who portrayed Quan Chi for this scene, but the costume and the makeup were on point. More than 20 years after Annihilation, Quan Chi would appear in an official Mortal Kombat film for the first time in 2020’s Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, an animated feature. Now, the character will finally make his proper live-action debut in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2.

What Could Quan Chi’s Role In Mortal Kombat 2 Be?

A first look at Quan Chi’s full costume has yet to be revealed

Shao Kahn and Quan Chi from the Mortal Kombat games and Shang Tsung from Mortal Kombat 2021

Mortal Kombat (2021) barely scratched the potential of the MK universe. The reboot did not even feature Netherrealm and only referenced some of MK’s most important characters and locations. The sequel, on the other hand, seems to be diving into the Mortal Kombat lore. This includes the addition of Quan Chi, who will likely be responsible for the returns of dead Mortal Kombat characters like Bi-Han, Kano, and Kung Lao. Quan Chi could have his agenda on Netherrealm, or he may be working with Shang Tsung. Quan Chi could also appear in flashbacks.

The Netherrealm necromancer is directly tied to Scorpion’s origin story, which the first film mostly skipped. Not only is Quan Chi the one who brought Hanzo back as Scorpion, but he is also responsible for the death of Hanzo’s family – depending on the version of the story. Mortal Kombat 2 could reveal that Quan Chi pretended to be Bi-Han to kill Hanzo’s family and then used Scorpion’s revenge as a way to manipulate the warrior. This adds another layer to the tragedy of Scorpion and could even lead to a team-up between Hanzo and Bi-Han against Quan Chi.
