Mortal Kombat 2 Will Have A Tough Time Continuing A Box Office Streak With A 2024 Release

Mortal Kombat 2 Will Have A Tough Time Continuing A Box Office Streak With A 2024 Release

Mortal Kombat 2 may be released in 2024, but the film will have a tough time continuing a franchise box office streak if it does hit this release date. Mortal Kombat 2 hasn’t been confirmed for a 2024 release date, but it definitely seems possible, with the film wrapping shooting in January 2024. While this release date would be exciting for fans of the franchise, it may be a bad idea, as it could mean that Mortal Kombat 2 will break a major box office streak.

Mortal Kombat 2 is almost here, with the highly-anticipated continuation of the 2021 reboot film currently in the works. 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot took the movie adaptation of the video game franchise in an entirely different direction, being much more faithful to the games than its predecessors. While Mortal Kombat did have its criticisms, the film was a step in the right direction, one that Mortal Kombat 2 can hopefully improve on.

Mortal Kombat 2 has a lot of improvements to make over its predecessor, but it seems like production is heading in the right direction.

Every Mortal Kombat Movie Has Been The Highest Grossing Video Game Movie The Year They Come Out

The Mortal Kombat movie series has set an interesting box office record, with each film being the highest-grossing video game movie of their respective years. This isn’t surprising for the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, as it was released in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the previous two films (1995’s Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat Annihilation) also met this goal, setting the stage for Mortal Kombat 2 to continue this trend.

Although it wasn’t critically well-received, 1995’s Mortal Kombat was a box office success, making $122 million. Mortal Kombat Annihilation was a failure however, with it only making $51.3 million, although this was still enough to make it the highest-grossing video game movie of 1997. 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot also struggled at the box office, but its $84.4 million total also helped it continue this record.

Mortal Kombat 2 Will Have Major Competition If It Comes Out In 2024

Sonic-the-Hedgehog

Although it isn’t confirmed, it is entirely possible that Mortal Kombat 2 could have a 2024 release date. This may be bad for the franchise, as it will have some major competition if it does come out in 2024. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is also set to release in 2024, and it will most likely outperform Mortal Kombat 2 at the box office, as Sonic‘s track record has been much better.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 isn’t the only major competition in 2024, as the Borderlands movie is also set to release this year. This is another major roadblock that could stop Mortal Kombat 2 from being the highest-grossing video game movie of the year, breaking this long-lasting streak.
