Mortal Kombat 2 producer Todd Garner teases the return of Hiroyuki Sanada’s Scorpion in the sequel to the 2021 video game adaptation. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the upcoming martial arts fantasy movie adapts the next stage of a deadly tournament between Earthrealm and Outworld, with new fighters joining the battle. In Mortal Kombat, Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion is a long-dead assassin from 17th century Japan condemned to the hellish Netherrealm after the brutal murder of his family by a rival clan.

Now, Garner has offered a small glimpse at Scorpion’s return in Mortal Kombat 2 with a sly set photo. Check it out below:

Garner shared an image taken from a camera on the set of the movie. The shot is focused on Scorpion’s iconic kunai against what appears to be a blue screen intended to show an otherworldly environment in the film’s final cut.

Who Is Behind Scorpion’s Return In Mortal Kombat 2?

The tragedy of Scorpion’s bloodline played a major part in Mortal Kombat. The film opened with Scorpion in life as he defended the Hasashi clan from Bi-Han (Joe Taslim) and his assassins, falling in battle as the attackers slaughtered most of his family. Bi-Han lives on and becomes Sub-Zero, but fate brings him into battle with Cole Young (Lewis Tan), a distant descendent of Scorpion. In Mortal Kombat‘s final battle, Cole releases Hanzo’s now vengeful spirit upon Sub-Zero, allowing the undead ninja to kill his rival and finally rest in peace.

However, two new additions to Mortal Kombat 2‘s cast may give the vengeful spirit a reason to make a return in the sequel. Alongside the confirmation Bi-Han himself will be resurrected as Noob Saibot, Damon Herriman joins the movie as Quan Chi, a major Mortal Kombat villain who helped play a part in the elimination of Scorpion’s clan and his damnation as an undead spirit. With Quan Chi making his debut, Scorpion’s return may be as a servant to the sorcerer, not knowing the role he played in his family’s murder.

Scorpion is one of Mortal Kombat‘s most iconic fighters, with his brutal attacks and catchphrases being some of the series’ most recognizable pieces of iconography. As such, with Mortal Kombat 2 expanding the movie universe, it seems there will be a very interesting reason for Scorpion’s return, and it could result in him being one of Cole’s foes. Only time will tell what happens to this storied warrior.
