Mortal Kombat 2 Already Sounds Much Better Than The 2021 Reboot

News regarding Mortal Kombat 2 is finally starting to come out, and the sequel already sounds so much better than the 2021 reboot. Mortal Kombat 2021 launched the most recent live-action Mortal Kombat movie franchise, with it attempting to set up a saga that consists of multiple movies, with each one set to introduce even more characters and lore from the Mortal Kombat video games. While the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie was a success, it did have some problems, but Mortal Kombat 2 is gearing up to take the franchise in a much more positive direction.

The history of live-action Mortal Kombat movies goes all the way back to 1995, with the release of Mortal Kombat and the 1997 sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation bringing the brutal and bloody franchise into live-action. However, these films were poorly received, with the movie franchise going on hiatus for over two decades. 2021’s Mortal Kombat saw the series finally come back, with the reboot recreating the characters and story for a whole new generation of movie fans. Despite it being released during the COVID-19 pandemic, Mortal Kombat was a financial success, leading to the upcoming sequel Mortal Kombat 2.

Mortal Kombat 2’s New Characters Mean It Is Using More Of The Games’ Lore

Mortal Kombat 2 is introducing several new characters, signaling that the upcoming sequel will be using even more of the lore from the video games. Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage will debut in Mortal Kombat 2, paying off the tease from the end of the first film, although he isn’t the only new addition to the roster. Jade, Kitana, Kahn, Quan Chi, King Jerrod, and Queen Sindel will be appearing for the first time in the reboot series, with these characters presumably fighting alongside the cast from the first film, including characters like Cole Young, Sonya Blade, and more.

The introductions of these new characters in Mortal Kombat 2 means that the sequel will be tying in all of their stories, which is cause for excitement for fans of the original games. The 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot did have some of the franchise’s most iconic characters, but the cast was pretty small compared to the rosters of some of the more recent Mortal Kombat games. Bringing this new batch of characters in will finally allow fans to see these beloved Mortal Kombat icons in live-action, with their stories playing out throughout the sequel.

Mortal Kombat 2 Won’t Have To Spend Time Introducing Earthrealm’s Champions

One of the best aspects of Mortal Kombat 2 is that the film won’t have to spend time introducing Earthrealm’s champions, allowing more time for the main story as well as gory fight sequences. In the Mortal Kombat movies, Earthrealm is the aptly-named realm that consists of Earth, with the Outworld hoping to conquer it by beating it in a tenth Mortal Kombat tournament. In the first film, Liu Kang and Kung Lao are the champions of Earthrealm, although Cole Young becomes one by the end of the film.

The gang is headed off to find Johnny Cage and train more champions for Earthrealm at the end of Mortal Kombat 2021, meaning that some new champions will appear in the sequel. However, all of Earthrealm’s main champions were already main characters in the 2021 film, meaning that the sequel won’t have to worry about setting them all up again. Johnny Cage will have to be developed, but this seems to be part of the main story of Mortal Kombat 2, with this being a much better option than taking time out of the story to set up insignificant champions.

Mortal Kombat 2 Knows What Didn’t Work About The 2021 Reboot

The recent updates about Mortal Kombat 2 are a good thing, as they show that the sequel knows what didn’t work about the 2021 reboot. One of the main criticisms of Mortal Kombat 2021 was the film’s lack of characters, with only a few picks from the franchise’s massive roster of characters appearing. Six new characters have already been announced to appear in Mortal Kombat 2, and there will undoubtedly be other surprising additions and cameos throughout the film.

On top of that, the story setup of Mortal Kombat 2 shows that the film’s narrative will most likely be a lot less convoluted. While it will contain more of the lore from the games, the characters are already all together and the threat has already been established, meaning that the sequel should hit the ground running. There are still a lot of questions surrounding Mortal Kombat 2, but the news has all been good signs so far.
