Mortal Kombat 2 Already Explained How The First Movie’s Dead Characters Can Return

Several deceased Mortal Kombat characters are expected to return in Mortal Kombat 2, and the sequel’s new game character is the perfect way to explain how. The upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 will see new champions, such as Karl Urban’s Johnny Cage, but also familiar faces from the first movie. Nailing the lineup of heroes and villains is the key to any good MK story, which is why the sequel already sounds better than the 2021 reboot.

Kung Lao, Kano, Goro, and Sub-Zero were some of the characters who died in Mortal Kombat (2021). Considering how big these characters are in the world of Mortal Kombat, it was easy to assume that at least a couple of them would return in the sequel. The Mortal Kombat 2 cast confirms that some dead champions will indeed return, and the new film already has the best, simplest way to undo their deaths.

Quan Chi Can Bring People Back From The Dead In Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat 2 will show that death is only another portal

Quan Chi is Mortal Kombat’s quintessential necromancer and one of the faces of Netherrealm, meaning Mortal Kombat 2 will not have too much trouble explaining how the deceased warriors will return to life. Confirming Mortal Kombat 2 actors whose characters died in the first movie include Josh Lawson (Kano), Joe Taslim (Bi Han), Max Huang (Kung Lao), and Hiroyuki Sanada (Hanzo Hasashi), the last of whom already returned from the dead at the end of the previous installment. A sequel bringing back so many dead characters can be surprising, but this is very common when it comes to Mortal Kombat.

As Shang Tsung put it best, “Death is just another portal” in the world of Mortal Kombat. The franchise’s version of the Underworld is a realm of itself, Netherrealm, which was strangely missing from the first film despite it depicting Scorpion’s origin story. Quan Chi’s addition to Mortal Kombat 2 makes a lot of sense not only because the necromancer can bring some of those characters back as evil specters but also because the sequel is expected to dive deeper into the saga’s lore and explore characters that haven’t got a chance to shine in live-action.

Death Doesn’t Mean Much In Mortal Kombat (& That’s Great)

The possibilities are endless for the franchise

For any other franchise, killing off characters only to bring them back in the next movie would feel cheap. However, this is the opposite for Mortal Kombat – not bringing those champions back would be a mistake. Some of the coolest and most important moments in the stories of a few MK characters happen after they die for the first – or second – time. This includes, for example, Sub-Zero, who already looked like he was living his second life in Mortal Kombat (2021) and may now return as Noob Saibot with the help of Quan Chi.

Mortal Kombat 2 Already Sounds Much Better Than The 2021 Reboot

Mortal Kombat 2 is still a while away, but it is already clear that the upcoming sequel sounds much better than the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot.

Part of Mortal Kombat’s charm is the ever-growing roster of champions, which can only be achieved by combining new characters with the current ones. Of course, some deaths have to be definitive for the story to have any sense of stakes or emotion. Additionally, even the deaths that will be undone in Mortal Kombat 2 will surely have a catch to them, such as Kung Lao likely becoming a servant of Shang Tsung. Regardless, the Mortal Kombat universe has its own set of rules, and it seems like the sequel will be adhering to them.
