“More Lively & Vibrant”: How Invincible Season 2’s Villain Is Different From His Comic Counterpart

“More Lively & Vibrant”: How Invincible Season 2’s Villain Is Different From His Comic Counterpart

Invincible creator Robert Kirkman has opened up about how a new villain coming to season 2, Angstrom Levy, will be different from his comic book version. A dimension-hopping villain that wants to destroy Mark Grayson, Angstrom is considered a formidable foe in the comic series. He also signifies a wider world for the story, which will no doubt continue to build when season 2 airs.

Speaking with IGN, Kirkman revealed the version of Angstrom to appear in Invincible season 2 will be very different from his comic counterpart. He explains how voice actor Sterling K. Brown brings Angstrom to life, while also teasing the new villain will be somewhat sympathetic. Check out what Kirkman had to say below:

Angstrom as brought to life by Sterling K. Brown is a more lively, more vibrant version of what we know from the comics. What Sterling has been able to wring out of our scripts is something real and vibrant and genuine. A true villain, with a solid core of understanding that makes him as sympathetic and relatable as he is dangerous and terrifying.

There’s a sympathy for his character that I don’t think is present in the comic. It’s possibly something that I intended, and maybe if I was a better writer, I would’ve been able to achieve on the page, but when you have an actor actually delivering the lines and living through that character and giving him this well-rounded, realistic emotion, there’s just a sympathy for Angstrom Levy that comes through much more than I expected, and that’s all Sterling.

Why Angstrom Will Be Invincible’s Most Dangerous Supervillain

Angstrom’s character explores the idea of multiple universes being present in the world of Invincible. This is because Angstrom’s goal is to absorb knowledge from versions of himself from other dimensions, becoming the ultimate version of himself. This quest has altered his body, with recent images from Invincible season 2 showing a version of Angstrom similar to his comic self.

After the end of Invincible season 1, Omni-Man leaves Earth behind after almost killing Mark. Because of this, new threats like Angstrom now have a chance to rise to greater power, making the mad genius a difficult threat for Mark to face down. However, with Angstrom getting a more sympathetic portrayal than in the comics, it’s possible he’ll get some sympathy from other characters despite his diabolical plans.

Though humanizing Angstrom more in the series doesn’t mean his goals will alter from his comic book version. It appears he will still be trying to kill Mark while obtaining as much knowledge as he can from different versions of himself. The extent of Angstrom’s dangerous objective will be revealed when Invincible returns to Prime Video on November 3.
