Moonfall Trailer Reveals Roland Emmerich’s Planet-Sized Disaster Movie

Lionsgate unveils the first trailer for Moonfall, offering the first look at Roland Emmerich’s planet-sized return to the disaster movie genre. Written and directed by the Independence Day helmer, the film sees a mysterious force knock the moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With only weeks remaining until impact, NASA executive Jo Fowler believes she has the key to save everyone and must team up with former astronaut Brian Harper and conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman to journey into space and discover the mystery behind their potential doom.

The cast for Moonfall is led by Halle Berry alongside Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Eme Ikwuakor, Carolina Bartczak and Donald Sutherland. Development on the film was first announced in early 2019 when Emmerich began putting it together as an independent project, one of the most expensive ever with a budget of $140 million, until Lionsgate acquired the domestic rights later that year. After having to replace originally cast Josh Gad due to scheduling conflicts and Stanley Tucci due to travel restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic, filming began late last year and now Moonfall is gearing up to come to audiences in 2022.

Following footage premiering at this year’s CinemaCon, Lionsgate has debuted the first trailer for Moonfall. The video offers a better look at the planet-sized disaster the world is facing in the film as well as the seeming extraterrestrial threats behind the moon’s sudden hurling towards Earth. Since his groundbreaking sci-fi hit Independence Day in 1996, Emmerich has made a name for himself in the disaster movie genre, delivering grandiose levels of destruction with The Day After Tomorrow2012 and Independence Day: Resurgence. While the latter film was poorly received, the first trailer for Moonfall looks to be an exciting return to form for the filmmaker and an intriguing new outing in the genre. Blending the same extraterrestrial sci-fi elements of the 1996 film and its sequel with the large-scale visuals and disasters of his other genre hits, the video certainly points towards a film fans of Emmerich have been eager to see since 2012.

In addition to the visual spectacle and disaster excitement for the film, the cast for Moonfall is well-stacked with powerful performers, namely Oscar winner Berry and Golden Globe and Emmy nominee Wilson. Though Midway proved to be a mixed bag of historical accuracy and poor screenwriting, Wilson proved to be a good pairing with Emmerich in the film and their latest partnership certainly looks to keep that ball rolling. Only time will tell when Moonfall hits theaters on February 4, 2022.
