Warning! Spoilers ahead for Moon Knight #2
In the latest issue of Marvel Comics’ Moon Knight, it’s revealed that Marc Spector possesses one of the strongest and most powerful minds in the Marvel Universe. While it’s certainly nuanced and complex due to his Dissociative Identity Disorder, the strength of Moon Knight’s mind comes from his status as the Fist and High Priest of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu. This new issue sees a confident Spector literally using his mind to challenge his neighborhood’s latest threat – one that’s been corrupting the minds of the elderly for his own dark desires.
In previous issues of Moon Knight, it’s been revealed that Marc Spector is still committed to being Khonshu’s high priest, despite being at odds with the moon god who’s currently imprisoned on Asgard for attempting to take over the world. Having opened the Midnight Mission where the innocent can seek refuge and call for help, Spector has been patrolling the territory in New York he’s sworn to protect, defending it from all sorts of criminals and creatures of the night who dare to intrude – such as vampires. However, Spector faces a whole different kind of threat in Moon Knight #2 from writer Jed McKay and artist Allessandro Cappuccio: the elderly.
Surprisingly, a large group of seniors has become possessed, terrorizing Moon Knight’s neighborhood until he eventually finds the source: a janitor named Hawley whose sweat allows him to control the minds of others. However, rather than being forced to harm Hawley’s horde of elders, Moon Knight offers a challenge to willingly go under his control, confident that he could overcome it. Sure enough, Moon Knight’s mindscape is unlike anything Hawley could have ever prepared for. Having been touched by a literal god, Marc Spector’s mind is too powerful and complex to be controlled and it’s strong enough to break the minds who’ve touched it as well.
Once Moon Knight finished putting Hawley through his terrifying and brutal mental gauntlet, the janitor’s mind was completely broken with no hope of recovery, proving that Spector’s mind is incredibly strong and may indeed be the greatest weapon he has at his disposal. Furthermore, Spector’s DID is only a small facet of why his mind is so unique and complex, and Spector says as much in the issue. In truth, the power of his extremely unique mind comes from his communions with Khonshu, having been chosen as his high priest which has lead to his mind exceeding the abilities of a mere mortal.
Moon Knight just proved that he’s as savage and brutal mentally as he is physically, and one has to wonder if this issue is suggesting that Spector has an immunity to mind control. Moon Knight did learn that Hawley was working for someone else who wants Spector broken, and it’s most likely the recently introduced Hunter’s Moon, the other Fist of Khonshu who sees Moon Knight as a failure and blemish in need of correction for their moon god. So it’s hard to know who’s pulling the strings. Regardless, here’s hoping Moon Knight can get to the bottom of who’s after him before the Hunter’s Moon strikes, most likely possessing as much of a unique mind as Moon Knight himself does.
