Monsterverse Just Created A New Titan Mystery The Movies Have Only Hinted At Before

Warning: Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 4

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 4 took an interesting detail about the Titans and turned it into a new mystery for the Monsterverse to solve. Over the years, Godzilla and Kong’s Monsterverse movies have done much to build on the lore surrounding the monsters in their shared cinematic world. Apple TV+’s Monarch show follows along with what the previous installments have already established, while also making its own contributions to the Monsterverse mythos.

The time periods chosen for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters have allowed the series to offer a look into the discovery of the Titans, both from the perspective of the scientists who first came across them decades ago and from everyday people who found out in 2014 that monsters are real. At both points in the Monsterverse timeline, people are still learning about the Titans, who will eventually stand revealed as ancient monsters hailing from an underground world. Gradually, the Monsterverse has dropped all sorts of interesting clues about them. Curiously, though, one particular aspect of the Titans has received very little attention, but may become a major point of interest going forward.

Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Acknowledges A Major Detail About Titan Biology

When asked about the Monsterverse’s new ice Titan in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 4, Lee Shaw explained that he didn’t know anything about this monster because he had never seen it before. Comparing them to snowflakes, he pointed out to Cate that from his experience, “no two Titans are the same.” Looking at the monsters utilized in previous Monsterverse installments, Shaw’s comment is surprisingly accurate, for the most part. There’s only one known member of most Titan species in the Monsterverse, including Rodan, Mothra, Ghidorah, Behemoth, Scylla, and more. Perhaps the only major exception to this is the Skullcrawlers.

Admittedly, there were two members of the MUTO species encountered in 2014’s Godzilla, but even so, Shaw’s observation can be applied to them as well. Despite being of the same species, the male and female MUTOs were markedly different, both in terms of their sizes and physical capabilities. This distinction further supports Shaw’s claim that, for one reason or another, each Titan in the Monsterverse is unique in its own way. Naturally, this raises the question as to why this would be the case.

Godzilla & Kong Prove That The Titans Weren’t Always Unique

While Shaw may be right when it comes to the living Titans in the Monsterverse, it doesn’t account for Titans that existed in the Monsterverse’s past. Skeletons seen in Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island, and Godzilla vs. Kong confirm that while Godzilla and Kong may be different from all other Titans known to be alive in the Monsterverse at present, there were indeed other monsters like them at some point in time. Both Kong and Godzilla are depicted as the last surviving members of Titan species that died out several millennia ago. The Kongs were wiped out by the Skullcrawlers whereas the Godzillas were driven to extinction for other reasons, with the MUTOs appearing to be one contributing factor.

The existence of other Godzillas and Kongs prove that thousands of years ago, the Titans weren’t unique and that there could have been multiple members of each species roaming the surface and the Hollow Earth. With that in mind, it’s clear that regardless of all the experience Shaw has, even he doesn’t have all the answers. That said, he does bring up a good point about the current state of the Titans. How things were thousands of years may be another matter, but in the present day, at least, it does appear that there’s only one left of the majority of the Titan species in the Monsterverse.

Godzilla & Kong’s First War Could Explain Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters’ New Titan Mystery

Before Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the unique nature of the Titans was only an unspoken fact about the Monsterverse, but now that it’s been openly acknowledged, it’s possible that there’s a legitimate answer to the question. If that’s true, it’s a mystery that could be solved in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Godzilla vs. Kong confirmed a Titan War happened in the Monsterverse’s ancient history but seemed to purposely avoid diving too deep into it. Going in that direction set it up to be a bigger plot point in the sequel.

With Godzilla x Kong likely to explain more about the war waged by Godzilla and Kong’s ancestors, there’s a chance the Monsterverse is about to explain why each Titan species may have no more than one representative in the Monsterverse. Since there were already hints of other monsters playing roles in Godzilla and Kong’s Titan War, the prospect of several Titan species being brought to near-extinction by the fighting is within the realm of possibility. By following through on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ setup, the next Monsterverse movie can deliver some much-needed answers.
