Monster High Pride Special Will “Celebrate the LGBTQIA+ Community”

A new special is coming from IDW Publishing with Monster High Pride 2024. This will be the franchise’s first LGBTQIA special, and it will feature some iconic staple characters including Clawdeen Wolf. This will be a big milestone as the best-selling doll line begins expanding into comics during its third-generation resurgence.

On Instagram, IDW Publishing teased the upcoming special and shared both comic covers for it. The first cover features Clawdeen Wolf and Toralei Stripe, illustrated by Betsy Cola. The second cover features Kieran Valentine and Spelldon Cauldronello, illustrated by @aepoyi (aka céli).

The story featuring Clawdeen and Toralei has the creative team of Hannah Templer and Siobhan Chiffon. Kieran and Spelldon’s story has the creative team of Megan Brown and Bowen McCurdy. The post doesn’t provide much more detail, but more information is available from Penguin Random House Comics.

Monster High Forges A New Era Of Inclusion

This upcoming Monster High comic will be 40 pages. The franchise has always showcased diverse characters while emphasizing inclusion. It celebrates differences and uniqueness. The series has frequently focused on its primary friend group of Frankie Stein, Draculaura, Clawdeen Wolf, Cleo de Nile, Lagoona Blue, and Ghoulia Yelps. This issue will also include Draculaura’s ex, Kieran Valentine, and Spelldon Cauldronello, who has only been featured in Kieran’s diary from the San Diego Comic-Con International (SDCCI) dolls. Kieran Valentine’s exclusive doll was released back in 2015. The synopsis for the one-shot is as follows:

Hi, Ghouls. Rainbow-striped flags are flying everywhere, which must mean it’s the best time of year: Pride Month. At Monster High, everyone belongs, and Pride Month is a time to skelebrate and show extra love to the LGBTQIA+ community.

First, Hannah Templer (Cosmoknights) and Siobhan Keenan (Big Ethel Energy) conjure a story about expectations and role models. Clawdeen and Toralei are claws over tails for each other…but their summer DIY project, and a group of mischievous gnomes, is threatening the ghouls’ relationship! Meanwhile, Ghoulia is writing fan fiction and is on the verge of starting a shipping war!

Then, Megan Brown (My Little Pony: Classics Reimagined – Little Filles) and Bowen McCurdy (Specter Inspectors) brew a fang-tastic love story. Kieran Valentine thinks love sucks. He enlists the help of his (very cute) Bite-ology partner, Spelldon Cauldronello, to create a potion that will drain him of the feeling forever. But after spending time with Spelldon, will he have the guts to follow through?

Based on the synopsis and cover art, it appears likely that the fandom ship of Toralei and Clawdeen, known as “Toradeen,” could be confirmed in just a few months. This would be a major turnaround for both characters in the current relaunch. There has been occasional discussion from the creator of Monster High, Garrett Sander, regarding some of the potential queer characters within the franchise. It’s implied that these elements of their stories were previously not allowed to be told and included. Now, with the third generation, things could be taking a major shift towards these characters being their full, authentic selves.

Monster High’s New Comics Brings Official Character Debuts

Spelldon Cauldronello will finally make his Monster High debut in Monster High Pride 2024. Previously, he was only mentioned in passing within the diary of Kieran Valentine. As a result, fans of the franchise have never seen what he looks like until now, thanks to the Pride cover reveal. Monster High had formerly been on a hiatus, but fan demand has resulted in more than just a return of the doll line. Last November, IDW announced Monster High: New Scaremester, an upcoming comic series set to debut for Free Comic Book Day 2024. With this new addition, the future of Monster High is very bright.

Monster High Pride 2024 will be available May 29 from IDW Publishing.
