Monarch’s Season 2 Setup Means It Can Easily Continue The Other Monsterverse Spinoff’s Story

The setup for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2 can easily continue the story of the Monsterverse’s other TV spinoff. The first live-action spinoff of the franchise explores the mysterious organization Monarch across two timelines, revealing new details about their study of Titans. This culminates in Monarch season 1’s ending, which sees the timelines converge as Cate, May, Lee, and Kieko are trapped in a pocket dimension of the Hollow Earth. Since time passes quicker in this world, they need to find a way home as fast as possible.

They end up finding Lee’s old vehicle from Operation Hourglass in the early 1960s, using it to escape back to Earth’s surface. While Lee sacrifices himself to fix the machine, allowing the others to escape, they end up back on Earth in 2017, two years after they left. They also end up at an Apex Cybernetics facility on Skull Island, the final shot revealing Kong approaching the research station. While this sets the stage for Monarch season 2, it also signals the story of another Monsteverse show could continue in this one.

Monarch Season 2 Can Help Netflix’s Skull Island Connect Better With The Monsterverse

The Animated Series Has The Weakest Monsterverse Connections So Far

In June 2023, Netflix released Skull Island, an animated series that serves as a standalone sequel to 2017’s Kong: Skull Island. The series, which is canon to the Monsterverse, follows a group of explorers who end up shipwrecked on the island, meeting an assortment of dangerous Titans alongside a mysterious girl named Annie. Skull Island season 1 ended on a cliffhanger, with Annie now in civilization, Charlie trapped on the island, and Mike’s fate up in the air. This opens the door for their stories to be addressed in Monarch season 2.

The Apple TV+ show has already provided new context to the Monsterverse movies, such as Monarch episode 7 revealing May worked for Apex, who later created Mechagodzilla in Godzilla vs. Kong. Because the next season takes place on Skull Island, it can offer new context to the location while maintaining the ideas and monsters established in the Skull Island show. This would give core details from the series a stronger presence in the Monsterverse, including the continuation of the series’ stories if Netflix doesn’t renew it.

How The Skull Island Show Could Connect With Monarch Season 2

Monarch Can Make Skull Island A Major Part Of The Monsterverse

Kurt Russell's character in Legacy of Monsters and Kong in Skull Island

Because Skull Island takes place in the 1990s – at least 20 years before the events of Monarch – the characters from the show would have to be much older if they showed up in live-action. However, their appearances could reveal their fates after the end of their series, offering closure to one story while continuing another. A character like Annie could also make for a useful guide to the island, revealing the existence of the many new creatures the animated series introduces. However, the show would also have to explain how Skull Island characters got embroiled with Apex.

If familiar elements or characters from Skull Island make an appearance in Monarch season 2, then the Apple TV+ show will have successfully strengthened the animated show’s connection to the wider Monsterverse. This could have plenty of ramifications, from guiding where a possible Skull Island season 2 would go, to introducing concepts for a Godzilla x Kong sequel. No matter how it turns out, though, the series has a unique chance to strengthen the Netflix show’s direct connectivity to the rest of the cinematic universe.
