Monarch’s Kurt & Wyatt Russell Reveal Each Other’s Past Roles They’d Like To Swap

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters stars Kurt and Wyatt Russell have revealed which of each other’s roles they would like to star in. Set in Legendary’s frequently expanding Monsterverse franchise, the new television show sees the father and son duo star as both an older and younger version of a former U.S. Army Colonel who eventually becomes involved with the secretive Monarch organization. While Monarch: Legacy of Monsters may mark the first time the two family members have played the same role, the two have a long history of working together dating back as far as Wyatt’s first onscreen role as an infant on 1987’s Overboard.

Speaking with MovieWeb, the two Russells were asked about each other’s impressive filmography and which role they would potentially like to play older or younger versions of. In a surprising choice, Wyatt chose his father’s 1980 comedy Used Cars, where the elder Russell played a hilariously disreputable used car salesman, Rudy Russo. Meanwhile, Kurt picked his son’s role in season 3 of Netflix’s hit anthology show Black Mirror. Check out their answers below:

Wyatt Russell: For me, I love Used Cars. I think it’s one of my favorite movies. And like playing the son of Rudy Russo would probably be pretty fun. I don’t know what that would look like, but I would… I would do that.

Kurt Russell: I think the one character would be the guy in Black Mirror. I might want to give that a shot.

Will Wyatt Russell Ever Take On His Father’s Most Famous Role?

As the son of two of Hollywood’s most celebrated stars, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, Wyatt Russell’s own rise to fame has long been linked to the screen history of his talented parents. In more recent years, however, Wyatt’s striking resemblance to his father has also prompted multiple calls for him to take over some of Kurt’s more famous roles, with Escape from New York’s Snake Plissken foremost among them.

Widely considered one of the elder Russell’s most iconic roles, the former United States Army Special Forces lieutenant-turned-criminal made his first appearance in John Carpenter’s 1981 sci-fi classic Escape from New York and would eventually return for the 1996 sequel Escape from LA. In the years that followed, several actors have been rumored or reported to be in contention for a possible reboot, including Olympus Has Fallen’s Gerard Butler and Avengers: Endgame’s Josh Brolin. Many fans of the movie, however, have suggested that Wyatt Rusell would be the perfect choice to succeed his father as Snake Plissken.

One impressive casting stunt in Apple TV+’s 2023 Godzilla television series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters highlights the flaws in another.

So far, however, Wyatt has been reluctant to step into the role, bluntly saying “there will be no Snake reboot from me.” Yet with Scream VI directors Radio Silence now planning what is reported to be a direct Escape from New York sequel, the potential still remains for Wyatt to don Snake’s famous eyepatch. Moreover, with other rumors suggesting that Kurt Russell has already signed on for the project, it may even be possible for the new movie to repeat Monarch: Legacy of Monsters trick and cast both actors as different versions of the same character.
