Monarch Show Accomplishes A Monsterverse First, Setting Up Future Human Vs. Titan Battles

Warning: Spoilers for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 7

A key development in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 7 marks a franchise-first for the Monsterverse that was almost 10 years in the making. Just as it is with Toho’s Godzilla movies, the conflict between humans and monsters is a key theme in Legendary’s Monsterverse. But from 2014’s Godzilla all the way to 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, the battles between them have been more than a little one-sided.

Humans have been historically ineffective against the Titans in the Monsterverse. Admittedly, that’s not necessarily surprising, considering the Titans’ size advantages, not to mention their various abilities. However, that’s not to say they don’t play crucial roles in the stories. Human characters in the Monsterverse movies often do their part to help Godzilla and Kong, such as the time Ford Brody lured the MUTOs away from Godzilla in the 2014 film. That said, there hasn’t been a single occasion in the Monsterverse – until Monarch: Legacy of Monsters – where a human was able to kill a Titan.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Gives Humanity Their First Confirmed Titan Kill

The ending of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 7 featured the first-ever Titan death to come at the hands of the humans. The Monsterverse’s new ice Titan, referred to as the Frost Vark, was killed by Lee Shaw’s team. After activating a large cache of explosives near the recently discovered “rift” in Alaska, the Frost Vark was shown getting obliterated by an immense discharge of energy. From the looks of things, this “rift” is akin to the portal APEX’s HEAV flew through in Godzilla vs. Kong. Apparently, the consequences of destroying a rift are catastrophic enough to eradicate anything in the vicinity – Titans included.

The last time humans came close to killing a Titan was in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. The military’s Oxygen Destroyer weapon severely hurt Godzilla, but as the human characters discussed, Godzilla wasn’t in danger of death. Even without Serizawa’s intervention, he would have recovered if given enough time. In Godzilla vs. Kong, Mechagodzilla killed a single Skullcrawler, but the alpha Skullcrawler in Kong: Skull Island is the only member of its species known to receive the official Titan classification. Not only that, but that particular kill should be credited at least partially to Ghidorah, who was instrumental in Mechagodzilla’s origin.

Monsterverse Proves The Hollow Earth Is The Answer To Beating Titans

Lee Shaw in Monarch Legacy of Monsters episode 6

Both Godzilla vs. Kong and now Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 7 are indicative of the idea that the Hollow Earth holds the solution to humanity’s TItan dilemma. Because of the Hollow Earth energy source, Mechagodzilla nearly killed both Godzilla and Kong. And now, Lee Shaw has managed to pull off the incidental death of a Titan via a Hollow Earth rift. If humans continue exploiting the Hollow Earth, they may get closer and closer to becoming formidable opponents to the Titans in the Monsterverse’s future – for better or worse.
