Monarch Makes X Crucial Reveals About Cate & Kentaro’s Father

Over the course of its story, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has provided much insight into the life of Hiroshi Randa, a subject of great mystery in the series. Although he was introduced as the son of John Goodman’s William Randa from Kong: Skull Island, Hiroshi has been presented as a Monsterverse legacy character in his own right. The Apple TV+ series follows the stories of his two adult children, whose investigations into his past lead them to embark on a Monsterverse journey of their own.

As Tim pointed out in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 5, working with Monarch is their “legacy.” In regards to their grandfather, it’s already apparent what this means. After all, Bill Randa has been featured heavily in the show’s 1950s storyline, not to mention his role in Monarch’s efforts to prove the Hollow Earth theory in Kong: Skull Island. As for Hiroshi’s part in it, his importance to the Monsterverse is still largely unknown. However, the Apple TV+ series has provided a handful of clues as to who he is, what he was up to in the Monsterverse timeline, and what happened to him after Godzilla’s battle with the MUTOs in San Francisco.

Hiroshi Stole Monarch’s Files To Protect Bill Randa’s Secrets

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has confirmed at least one aspect of Hiroshi’s objective in the series. As Kurt Russell’s Lee Shaw postulated in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 3, Hiroshi must have stolen Monarch’s files to avoid the organization uncovering something that his father figured out years ago. Much of what’s in the files is built on information from Bill’s journals. What he specifically didn’t want them to know hasn’t been revealed, but something Bill Randa discovered between the 1950s and his death in 1973 must have been something so massive that Hiroshi felt it was too important to be shared with anyone at Monarch.

Why he would have a problem with Monarch having access to Bill Randa’s research may have something to do with what Lee Shaw said about Monarch’s change in direction. He mentioned that Monarch “lost their way.” Monarch no longer being focused on their original mission may have contributed to Hiroshi striking out on his own and acting independently. However, there’s no evidence yet if Hiroshi shared Shaw’s opinions of Monarch’s failures.

Hiroshi Randa’s Secret Mission Began On G-Day

The secret mission that Hiroshi Randa took upon himself to complete in the Monsterverse began on G-Day, the day Godzilla defeated the MUTOs. Flashbacks in episode 4 showed Cate’s last conversation with Hiroshi; she spoke to him on G-Day to get him to leave with them, but he refused to come with her. It appears that the emergence of Godzilla (or the MUTOs) on G-Day is what triggered Hiroshi’s sudden departure for Alaska. Why Godzilla’s fight spurred him to abandon his family during a tragedy remains a question Cate has yet to find an answer to in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Hiroshi Randa Was Attacked By The Monsterverse’s Ice Titan

Like Cate, Kentaro, May, and Lee Shaw in episode 3, Hiroshi Randa had an encounter with the Monsterverse’s ice Titan in Alaska. Referred to as the Frost Vark, the monster attacked Hiroshi’s plane after it landed. However, he survived the arrival of the ice Titan and made his way through the snow to set up a camp in the wilderness. Kentaro found proof of his survival when he came across pencil shavings, which act as a signature of sorts from Hiroshi Randa. Based on what Kentaro found, Hiroshi fixed a radio and made his way out of Alaska safely. As for what he was doing in Alaska in the first place, the presence of the ice monster is likely a huge hint.

Hiroshi Randa’s Monarch Work Was “Data-Driven”

Hiroshi Randa wasn’t a monster hunter like his father

Though they worked for the same organization, there’s a significant distinction between what Shaw, Keiko, and Bill Randa did for Monarch and the type of work that Hiroshi was entrusted with. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters established the difference in episode 3 when Cate asked if he traveled around hunting monsters. Lee Shaw explained that this was not the case and that the way Monarch agents operated changed before Hiroshi joined. Lee said that much of their work had already become “data-driven” by that point. Hiroshi worked mostly with satellites. In other words, it’s unlikely that Hiroshi had the same level of hands-on experience with the Titans that characters like Keiko, Shaw, and Bill had in the 1950s.

Lee Shaw Hasn’t Seen Hiroshi Randa Since The 1990s

Hiroshi stopped seeing Lee Shaw 20 years ago

How Hiroshi was brought into Monarch hasn’t been explored yet, though the Monsterverse has touched on his relationship with Lee Shaw. Judging by Shaw’s comments, they had a fairly good relationship, with Shaw remarking that Hiroshi never lied to him. Shaw also wasn’t aware of anything unusual about him. However, the two haven’t seen each other in 20 years. What that means is that Hiroshi’s activities since the mid-1990s are likely unknown to Shaw. Based on the timeline provided by Kurt Russell’s character, there’s a good chance that it was during this period that Hiroshi began keeping secrets from Monarch. It was also during this time that he was maintaining his dual families in San Francisco and Tokyo.

Hiroshi Randa Went To Africa

Africa was one of several locations bookmarked by Hiroshi

The ending of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters episode 5 seemingly revealed Hiroshi Randa’s next destination after leaving Alaska. Based on a star map discovered in his San Francisco office, Hiroshi charted a path from San Francisco, to Alaska, and finally, to Africa. Why he went there isn’t clear, but his actions are clearly related to some sort of Titan activity. After all, Godzilla and the MUTOs converged on San Francisco, and there was a Titan hiding in Alaska, both of which being locations on the map. That makes it all the more likely that there’s a Titan in Africa as well. It’s hard to say if Africa remains his current location in the Monsterverse, or if he’s since moved on to another area.
