Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters!
With the show having already introduced multiple new M.U.T.O.s, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters stars Anna Sawai and Kiersey Clemons tease the impending arrival of a mystery Titan. Sawai and Clemons star in the 2015 storyline of the Monsterverse show as Cate Randa and May Olowe-Hewitt, an American teacher and a skilled hacker who team up with Ren Watabe’s Kentaro Randa, Cate’s previously unknown half-brother, and Kurt Russell’s Lee Shaw to find the Randas’ father. During their search, the group come across multiple Titans, including a Frost Vark and Godzilla himself.
As the show continues its run, Screen Rant interviewed Sawai and Clemons to get some insight on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. When asked which Titan they’d most like to see in the show, the stars teased there’s a mystery one yet to appear that is there favorite, quickly playing coy about which it is and when it will appear. Will Legacy of Monsters Culminate In Another Titan Battle?
While the show has mostly focused on its human characters, an element criticized in previous Monsterverse installments before scoring acclaim in Legacy of Monsters, there have been some instances of exciting Titan action. In addition to flashbacks to Godzilla’s rampage through San Francisco in the 2014 franchise starter, the show has seen Cate and her friends face off against the ice-powered Frost Vark, and the younger Shaw encountering Endoswarmers, an Ion Dragon and Godzilla himself in the show’s past storyline.
Monarch: Legacy Of Monsters Timeline & All Time Periods Explained
Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters show explores multiple periods in the Monsterverse timeline, each with their own significance to its history.
More than just expanding the roster of M.U.T.O.s existing within the Monsterverse, however, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters seems to be building towards another epic Titan battle. The elder version of Shaw is keen to help Godzilla escape the organization’s detection for an unknown goal. Given Shaw was also seen closing off a rift to Hollow Earth that emerged in Alaska, it seems he may be looking to drive Godzilla towards any other Titans currently inhabiting the world in the hopes of making the iconic creature the only one left. This would even create an interesting parallel between Shaw and Ken Watanabe’s Serizawa from the first two Godzilla movies, with the Monarch scientist sacrificing himself to revive the Titan in the hopes of defeating Ghidorah.
The only hurdle that may prevent another epic Titan showdown between Godzilla and the mystery one teased by Sawai and Clemons is Monarch: Legacy of Monsters‘ timeline within the Monsterverse. Aside from the event referred to as G-Day and King of the Monsters‘ worldwide destruction, there have been no previously recorded instances of Godzilla fighting a Titan explicitly told to audiences. Given the secretive nature of both Monarch and Apex Cybernetics, the creator of Mechagodzilla, it’s possible that they kept such a battle under wraps in the hopes of not scaring the public. However, with how closely creators Matt Fraction and Chris Black have stayed to fleshing out the Monsterverse lore without any major retcons, it remains doubtful that the future mystery Titan’s appearance will result in another large-scale fight.
