Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Creators Reveal Surprising Kaiju They Want in Season 2 & Beyond

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 finale!

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters creators Chris Black and Matt Fraction have revealed which Toho kaiju they want to see featured in future seasons of the show. The Apple TV+ addition to the Monsterverse takes place in the 1950s and 2010s, expanding the backstory of its titular Titan-monitoring organization. Throughout the series, a multitude of original monsters were featured, alongside appearances from Godzilla and Kong.

Speaking with Comicbook.com, Black and Fraction expressed interest in featuring some surprising Toho kaiju in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2. Their proposed additions are Hedorah and Jet Jaguar, two monsters introduced in early Godzilla movies. Check out what Black and Fraction had to say about their proposed additions below:

Black: Listen, Toho has a strong bench. I personally love Hedorah the Smog Monster. Toho have been incredible collaborators and I think any of their creations would be available to us if we wanted to bring them into our world.

Fraction: I would love to be able to introduce a MonsterVerse iteration of a Toho creature that hasn’t been in the films to the show. It’s a very deep bench and I think everyone has their own favorites. I love Jet Jaguar, he’s not quite a kaiju, but I love Jet Jaguar.

Black: Matt keeps pitching Jet Jaguar and I keep shooting him down. We’ll see.

Fraction: I don’t think Jet Jaguar is hard to translate here, but I would love to have this fight for six more seasons.”

Which Toho Monsters Could Work For Monarch Season 2?

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters Creators Reveal Surprising Kaiju They Want in Season 2 & Beyond

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 1 ended with Cate, May, and Keiko finding their way out of the Hollow Earth, arriving on Skull Island two years after they disappeared. This means season 2 would still take place before Godzilla: King of the Monsters, making it unlikely for Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah to appear in the show. However, that still leaves the door open for other Toho monsters like Hedorah or Jet Jaguar.

In the original Godzilla movies, Hedorah was a monster created because of pollution, an origin that could be tweaked in Monarch to explain its appearance above the Hollow Earth. As for Jet Jaguar, his status as a robot means a version designed by Apex Cybernetics could show up in the future. Either of these kaiju could be used to bridge the gap between films, perfect for small-scale conflicts with other established Titans.

Toho also has their own King Kong movies, with monsters that could be introduced in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2. One of these kaiju is Mechani-Kong, a robotic version of Kong whose appearance could explain what Apex is doing on Skull Island. With a number of directions for the series to go in the future, there’s no telling what other monsters may appear if the series gets renewed.
