Miyazaki Speaks On The Boy And The Heron’s Oscar Nominations In A Hilarious New Video

Following the wild success of The Boy And The Heron, Hayao Miyazaki recently had an interview with members of the Oscar Awards where he talked about the recent Oscar nominations he received, and it was not what fans expected.

It is customary for nominees of the prestigious award to film a video and share their opinions on the nomination. In a video posted on the official YouTube page of the Oscar Awards, the creators of the nominated films for Animated Feature Films talked about the movie-making process and the impact of their work.

At the 26:10 minute mark, Hayao Miyazaki recorded a live stream together with his friend Toshio Suzuki, the president of Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki also debuted a new look, shaving his iconic beard. He then went on to give hilarious answers to Suzuki’s questions, and fans loved every second of it.

Miyazaki’s Sense of Humor Is Still Strong

The famous director is well-known for his dry, tongue-in-cheek jokes about the anime industry

The live stream was played in the David Geffen Theatre, located in the Academy Museum. Viewers were laughing at Miyazaki’s answers and his nonchalant attitude in the interview. When asked what he liked about the film, he paused for a bit and answered that he was glad it was over. He then went on to say that he persisted through the long process because the money incentivized him to, and the two burst into laughter.

Although the short video was funny, there is a lot of truth to it. The Boy And The Heron took seven years to make, the longest prodution time of any Miyazaki project so far. Regardless, the long production time was worth it as the movie surpassed everyone’s expectations, both in quality and reception. Being honored with two Golden Globe nominations and an Oscar nomination, not to mention the $127 million box office sales, The Boy And The Heron did not disappoint.
