Minecraft Plugin Gives Players A Working Chessboard

Chess has had a renaissance in the past year, and it seems the centuries-old game can now be played in Minecraft with a simple plugin. Minecraft started as a small project in 2009. Now the game sits at the cusp of updates 1.17 and 1.18, both set to release later this year. Minecraft’s Bedrock Edition also receives updates and DLC occasionally, the most recent Minecraft DLC being a crossover with How to Train Your Dragon.

Minecraft is a world in which creativity reigns above all. Through incredibly ingenious mods, plugins, builds, and servers, the game is more alive today than ever. Many people use Minecraft to practice their development capabilities. One builder managed to put together a custom Minecraft island that is generated much like the rest of the world in Minecraft. The game has endless potential, including being a great game to blow off some steam or have fun with friends on.

However, sometimes the most interesting Minecraft additions are the simplest. Reddit user cup0fcode recently posted a video of a working chessboard in the game. It’s even set to calculate and show each side’s advantage, much like many online chess platforms. According to the user, this is thanks to a plugin that strictly uses Vanilla Minecraft mechanics. While other board games like Clue have been somehow recreated in Minecraft, chess has a particular appeal due to its recent resurgence.

In general, recreating games within other games has become a news-worthy feat. This includes giving Minecraft players the opportunity to play other games while in-game or recreating important objects from them. Larger games tend to get a lot of attention in this area. A recreation of Link’s house from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a recent example of the gaming community using Minecraft to show love for more of their favorite games.

Many of these builds tend to grab a lot of attention. While implementing chess is a feat of its own, it’s more impressive on the backend than the frontend. Oftentimes, the most exciting and fascinating Minecraft accomplishments are more visual. From recreations of Italian churches to intricate additions to the game through mods, Minecraft creators have a lot to offer, and as long as people have imaginations, Minecraft will have a place in gaming. In between updates from developer Mojang, Minecraft players never have to look very far for something new and exciting.
