Netflix’s serial killer drama Mindhunter is gearing up for season 2 and in doing so has lined up some serious talent behind the camera by bringing on Andrew Dominik and Carl Franklin to direct episodes. The pair will join David Fincher in the ongoing exploration of deviancy and the criminal mind, as FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany), along with Dr. Wendy Carr (Anna Torv), try to create a new standard for tracking, anticipating, and understanding perpetrators of some of the most heinous crimes ever committed.
Details on season 2 of the series have been floating around for a while, as it seems the action will focus largely on Georgia as Mindhunter aims to explore the Atlanta child murders that took the lives of at least 28 victims from 1979 to 1981, and ended with the trial and conviction of Wayne Williams for the killing of two victims, who were actually adults at the time. Though the series is fact based and depicts interactions with real-life people like Ed Kemper (Cameron Britton) and Dennis Rader (Sonny Valicenti), the BTK Killer, it also takes plenty of dramatic license, so it will be interesting to see how this case is depicted on the show.

As reported by The Playlist, Mindhunter has enlisted the help of two accomplished filmmakers in Andrew Dominik and Carl Franklin. The director of the criminally underseen Denzel Washington detective thriller Devil In a Blue Dress, Franklin is no stranger to working in television or with Fincher. He directed four episodes of House of Cards between seasons 1 and 2, but has also worked on series like The Leftovers, Homeland, and Netflix’s YA hit, 13 Reasons Why.
Meanwhile, Dominik has delivered striking and memorable films like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Killing Them Softly, both of which starred frequent Fincher collaborator Brad Pitt. His addition to the series is a welcome sign that Mindhunter is hoping to again deliver upon a particular visual aesthetic and unsettling, darkly funny tone. Given the work he did in Killing Them Softly, Dominik should be able to deliver what Mindhunter is looking for in abundance.
What’s most surprising, however, is that Fincher, Dominik, and Franklin make up the entire directors list for the new season. That there are only three directors on board in season 2 is in itself a welcome sign, as it suggests the series will be able to maintain a level of consistency across what is reportedly an eight-episode season, while also bringing in talent who may be able to deliver some surprising flourishes for the show when it finally returns.
