Milestone Animated Movie Announced

A new Milestone animated movie has been announced at DC FanDome. Milestone Media was founded by a group of African-American artists, including Dwayne McDuffie, Denys Cowan, Michael Davis, and Derek T. Dingle, in 1993 with the intention of addressing the underrepresentation of racial minorities in superhero franchises. DC distributed and published the company’s comics, forming the Dakotaverse comprising of the most popular characters from Milestone Media. Titles like Hardware, Static, Blood Syndicate, and Icon quickly became popular among fans expanding the universe beyond comics and onto TV shows and video games. In 1997, Milestone shut down its comics division, although now, the media company is experiencing a resurgence.

Plans for a Milestone revival date as far back as 2015. Writer Reginald Hudlin has been working tirelessly with surviving co-founders Denys Cowan and Derek Dingle to relaunch the media group, although it’s only now that his efforts are bearing fruit. At DC FanDome last year, Hudlin announced that the Milestone Comics line would be revived soon. The imprint then returned with great acclaim earlier this year, launching titles, such as Static: Season One, Icon & Rocket: Season One, and Hardware: Season One. Now it looks that the company is also venturing back into the realm of digital media, as a new movie set within the Dakotaverse has been announced.

During DC FanDome 2021, Hudlin and Cowan announced that an animated Milestone movie is in the works. At the moment, the project seems to be at a nascent stage as no director and talents are attached, although Hudlin and Cowan have confirmed that the screenplay is being written by Hardware: Season One writer Brandon Thomas. Hudlin and Cowan also shared the official artwork for the movie from artist Bill Sienkiewicz. The poster unites several of the Milestone superheroes, including Static, Rocket, Icon, and Hardware, thereby confirming their appearance in the forthcoming movie. Over the years, characters from Milestone Media have appeared in multiple TV shows and video games. Static, for instance, was the lead in his own animated series, which ran on Kids’ WB for four seasons, and Rocket also appeared as a playable character in Young Justice Legacy. Still, after all this time, none of the Dakotaverse superheroes have made it to the big screen. But in this new era of Milestone revival, the visionaries behind the media group are actively trying to bring their characters to life in films as well. Currently, a Static Shock movie is also in development besides the animated Milestone movie. It’s being produced by Hudlin and Michael B. Jordan, with Randy McKinnon writing the screenplay. Other details on both Static Shock and Milestone are currently scant, but fans will surely learn more about them in days to come.

There is no better way for Milestone Media to reignite fans’ interest in its colorful characters than by making an animated film about them. The superheroes in the Dakotaverse are all quite popular, and to see them together in one place is no less than a dream-come-true for ardent enthusiasts. Of course, the media group could have opted for a live-action movie instead, but now feels a bit too early for that, as it’s better to introduce the superheroes independently before making them crossover into each other’s stories. It’s still a possibility down the line, especially if the new Milestone animated movie turns out to be a success. Obviously, right now, the information isn’t as plentiful to make something out of the announcement. But hopefully, as time passes by, fans will become more acquainted with the premise of Milestone and what it has to offer.
