Mike Flanagan’s New TV Show Is The Haunting Season 3 Replacement We’ve Been Waiting For

Mike Flanagan has received an abundance of praise for his horrifying Netflix series, and although he won’t be making a third season of his Haunting anthology at this point, his next series, The Fall of the House of Usher, is certainly a strong replacement. In 2016, Mike Flanagan came to prominence with his film Ouija: Origin of Evil, and in the intervening years, he has created some unforgettable Netflix horror projects such as Midnight Mass and The Midnight Club. However, what are arguably Flanagan’s most terrifying horror shows are The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

The Haunting series captured audiences’ attention via their disturbing content and creepy, haunted house atmospheres. The Haunting of Hill House is based on the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name, while The Haunting of Bly Manor is based on Henry James’ “The Turn of the Screw.” There is certainly a demand for a third season, however, Flanagan doesn’t plan on making it. Answering a fan question on his tumblr, Flanagan said, “I’m much happier focusing on other things… and being that I’m no longer at Netflix, that ship has definitively sailed.” Thankfully, fans aren’t completely without their thrills as Flanagan’s new Netflix series nears its release.

The Fall Of The House Of Usher Is The Closest We’ll Get To The Haunting Season 3

Although Haunting season 3 is not in the cards, fans aren’t at a total loss, as Mike Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher is a strong alternative. The new series, based on the story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, follows siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher, heads of a lucrative pharmacuetical company, that must face their dark pasts when their heirs begin dying. Though the series isn’t part of the Haunting franchise, the two definitely share similar qualities that makes The Fall of the House of Usher certainly worth the watch for those who enjoyed The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor.

First and foremost, like the Haunting series, The Fall of the House of Usher is a book-to-tv adaptation. Mike Flanagan clearly has a talent for taking macabre texts and translating them to the screen, and bringing old stories into modern perspectives, so it seems likely that this new series will be great. Additionally, The Fall of the House of Usher has very similar themes to the Haunting series. For example, all three series involve families in a haunted house setting. Ultimately, with Mike Flanagan at the helm, The Fall of the House of Usher is likely going to offer the very same frights that the Haunting series did.

Mike Flanagan Returning To A Haunted House & Family Is His Perfect Netflix Series Bookend

The Fall of the House of Usher being Mike Flanagan’s final project at Netflix is actually pretty perfect. Though a final season of the Haunting anthology would have been great, this new direction works just as well. Namely, The Fall of the House of Usher is something new for Flanagan, but also, doesn’t stray too far from what he’s good at: families in haunted houses. Ultimately, The Fall of the House of Usher is likely to be a homerun for the filmmaker, and this will be the ideal way to end his time with Netflix before he moves on to Amazon Prime Video.
