Michael Rosenbaum Comments On Whether He’d Be Interested In A Smallville Movie 13 Years After The DC Show’s Finale

Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum is down to return to the role of Lex Luthor in a potential DC movie with his cast members. Before The CW had the Arrowverse, Smallville was one of the flagship shows of the network, as it carried over from The WB when they merged with UPN in 2006. Had it not been for Smallville’s success, the era of Greg Berlanti’s Arrowverse franchise wouldn’t have been possible, as the Superman live-action TV show paved the way for more comic book properties on the small screen.

While the Smallville cast finished the show back in 2011, there could always be the potential for a reunion project down the line. During an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Rosenbaum gave an update on the potential Smallville animated show, but also chatted about the possibility of a movie in the future. Even though a Smallville movie is not officially in the cards, Rosenbaum shared his thoughts on why bringing the show back as a film could be a fun way to revive the series:

I asked Tom the other day, ‘If Al and Miles came to us and said, ‘We got this great idea for a Smallville movie. We want you guys to get in shape for the next two months, and then we’re going to go shoot this movie like a real finale…’ We were both like, ‘Yeah!” If it was right, I think that would be dope. So many other shows are doing that. I would certainly consider it. It would have to something that, again, was grounded. But if Al and Miles did it, and wanted to do a one and half hour movie, I think Tom and I — we’d all consider it. I think we’d have fun going back, but we’d have to really work to get back into those characters in that mindset because we’re a lot older. But if you shaved my head and you put makeup on me, it still works!

Tom Welling’s Clark Kent and Erica Durance’s Lois Lane are one of the best DC couples, and Smallville’s Superman & Lois had many epic moments.

What A Smallville Movie Revival Could Be About

If a Smallville movie were ever to get greenlit, there are multiple directions for them to take the show several years later. For Tom Welling’s Superman, a Smallville film revival could explore where this incarnation of the Man of Steel is today after the 2011 series finale. There are also elements from the Smallville season 11 tie-in comic that a potential movie could tackle, showing Welling’s Superman engage with other iconic Justice League heroes and DC villains.

Another story element that could be worth tackling in a Smallville movie is the plot twist revealed in Arrowverse’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event where Welling’s Superman had given up his powers. A Smallville film could pick up after the recreation of the new multiverse and reveal whether or not Clark has his abilities back and what the rest of the characters in that universe are up to today. If they really wanted to go back in time, they could have the Smallville movie be set directly after the series finale and explore Clark’s first days as Superman.

Whether or not a Smallville movie ever happens remains to be seen, as DC Studios is currently focusing on building James Gunn’s DC Universe. However, a Smallville film could easily fall into their Elseworlds banner, while also reviving one of DC’s most popular live-action properties. For now, the world will have to wait and see if Smallville ever makes a comeback, whether it be as a reunion movie or sequel show.
