Michael Cera’s 9-Years-Late Meme Response Helped Reunite The Scott Pilgrim Cast

Michael Cera’s delayed response to a meme helped bring his Scott Pilgrim vs. the World cast back together. Playing the titular Scott Pilgrim, a dorky teenage musician trying to sign a record deal while battling his new girlfriend’s seven evil exes. Cera’s role in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World helped cement the young actor’s stardom, having come off of the success of Superbad. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World had a cast replete with stars, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brie Larson, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza, and Jason Schwartzman.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World graphic novel creator Bryan Lee O’Malley unveils the odd way that Cera worked to keep the cast together. Speaking with Variety, O’Malley revealed that Cera simply had a nine-years-delayed response to a meme from a cast and crew email thread. Fellow cast members, including Evan, who played movie star Lucas Lee, mocked Cera for the years-late response, but nonetheless it got the Scott Pilgrim team talking again. Check out O’Malley’s quote from below:

“The cast have spoken about this email chain a lot but there’s one detail that I don’t think anyone has mentioned. We were exchanging emails when the movie was coming out and then this thread went dormant for about nine years. Then, before this anime was even on the docket, Michael Cera responded to a meme someone had sent as if no time had passed. He just said, ‘Oh, that’s funny.’ Chris Evans responded like, ‘Michael, what the f*ck are you doing responding to this email from nine years ago?’ And then we all started chatting again.”

Michael Cera’s Close-Knit Scott Pilgrim Co-Stars Helped Keep Him Acting

Michael Cera’s 9-Years-Late Meme Response Helped Reunite The Scott Pilgrim Cast

To those familiar with Cera and his work, this response almost seems too perfect for the actor. On-screen, Cera is known for playing awkward characters that gain humor from their discomfort – like Scott Pilgrim, Juno’s Paulie Bleeker, and Superbad’s Evan – and off-screen, he is an often-memed actor. So, for Cera to reunite the cast in such a peculiar manner, matches his characters.

Cera has previously mentioned that he bonded closely with the film’s team, and left the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World set feeling “depressed” that it was over. The actor even cited his cast mates for being his impetus to stay in acting after nearly quitting in the wake of Superbad. Cera had apparently been overwhelmed by the often boundary-disrespecting attention from fans following its success.

With Scott Pilgrim vs. the Worlds cast being so tight, Cera ultimately decided to stay in acting. It is good that he did, as the actor has gone on to play key roles in a number of blockbuster films, including this year’s Barbie. Luckily for Cera, the actor has even gotten the opportunity to re-immerse himself in the world of Scott Pilgrim as he returns as a voice actor in the upcoming anime Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
