Melissa Barrera’s Scream 7 Replacement Actually Sounds Better Than Fighting Ghostface Again

Melissa Barrera’s Scream 7 Replacement Actually Sounds Better Than Fighting Ghostface Again

Although Melissa Barrera was fired from Scream 7, the news surrounding her upcoming horror movie already sounds like it will be an even better entry in the slasher genre than Scream VII. Despite Barrera’s Scream 7 firing, the Mexican actress has remained busy with a string of enticing movies on the way. With notable appearances in horror movies like Scream, Bed Rest, and Scream VI, Barrera has already demonstrated why she’s one of her generation’s best scream queens. Although Scream 7 will feel different without Barrera in the cast, her upcoming slasher movie has the potential to outshine Scream 7.

In addition to her work in the horror genre, Barrera has also delivered solid performances in dramas and musicals, which only makes her post-Scream VI work even more exciting. Barrera’s Sam Carpenter character debuted in 2022’s Scream, and was immediately a welcome addition to the franchise since she’s one of the slasher series’ more complexly written characters. Balancing a strong desire to look after people she cares about with an intensity and tenacity to hold her own in dangerous situations, Barrera’s work in the slasher movie genre sets up exciting potential for her upcoming new slasher.

Casting changes for Scream 7 means the franchise can’t fulfill an arc that would have introduced a Ghostface twist linked to an original character.

Melissa Barrera’s New Horror Movie Will Be Bloodier Than Other Radio Silence Movies

Most Radio Silence horror movies are more psychological than they are bloody or gory.

Melissa Barrera as Sam in Scream 6

With popular movies under their belt, like V/H/S, Ready or Not, Scream, and Scream VI, production company Radio Silence has demonstrated time and again a distinct mastery over scaring audiences with more psychologically charged imagery and writing than relying on intense violence and gore. However, their upcoming Abigail is set to be the most bloody movie that they’ve ever made. Abigail sees a group of criminals fighting for their survival after kidnapping the daughter of a powerful figure and bringing her to a luxurious safehouse only to realize that she’s a vampire. Barrera plays Joey, one of the kidnappers, and given her past work in horror, it looks like she’ll deliver another great performance.

Scream and Scream VI helped introduce the iconic slasher series to a new generation while keeping the franchise’s signature meta sense of humor. Abigail already looks like it also has the potential to be another beloved entry in the slasher franchise based on its trailer alone. Abigail‘s unique take on the vampire mythos, its strong cast consisting of Barrera, Dan Stevens, and Giancarlo Esposito, among others, suggests the upcoming slasher will be Radio Silence’s most ambitious and bloodiest slasher movie to date.

Abigail Sounds Even More Intense Than Scream 7 Would Have Been

Abigail promises more intense scenes of blood, violence, and genuinely scary moments.

Alisha Weir as a bloody Abigail in Abigail

Although Scream and Scream VI displayed Barrera’s strong acting chops, she had to share the screen with co-breakout star Jenna Ortega, along with many of the cast from the original Scream franchise. Even with Abigail boasting an impressive cast, it’s much smaller by comparison, and the trailer implies that Barrera’s Joey will have more time to shine than even Sam did in the Scream movies. Additionally, despite the Scream franchise boasting its fair share of gore, the movies typically underscore the kills with their impeccable self-reflexive sense of humor. Abigail looks like it will embrace more of the gore and brutal kills, which already makes it unique and more intense.
